Singing Harmony
« on: September 09, 2006, 05:02:34 PM »
My name is jayson. I'm 17 and I live in charlston, Sc. I'm a very gifted baritone who loves to sing. I have two friends. One is a tenor and another is a soprano who can also sing alto. They are very good at harmony. When we sing they instantly break into harmony. I try to make it three parts but I always wind up either going off key, changing key, or singing what the tenor sings only an octave lower. They have to feed me my note...How can learn I to sing harmony so that we can sing three parts without one of us sounding off key? Any tips would be greatly apprecaited.

Actually practice makes better because nobody's perfect. However, the only thing you can do is practice A LOT.  There isn't a lot of gospel music that uses baritones,so you'll have to find some 4-part music or some TTBB music where you can hear the parts and find them.

Can you play the piano? If so, buy some 4-part music or TTBB music and play the harmony parts. This should give you some help.

In addition to what sjonathan02 said, train your ears to be able to differentiate between different notes and really practice just doing simple songs making up harmonies by yourself and then have someone else sing with you while maintaining your own pitch.

What you will have to do is instead of singing the tenor part you will need to learn the bass part. The bass part is whatever note the bass guitar plays (excluding runs) if you have a friend that can play the piano, I'm sure they can help you find that part....
