no more leads no more solos so how do i go about it
« on: January 14, 2007, 08:19:03 PM »
for the next few months i am noet going to do any songs that require leads in my church

the only problem some of the best songs have leads

has anyone else had any experience converting lead songs to non lead songs

i was thinking about letting the sopranos or ladies only do the lead parts and have the rest of the choir do the answers

any advice would help

by the way i have the voices to do solos and leads i am just not going to use them for a while

To be or not to be that is the question you anwer when you pray practice and read your word

My man, you have set quite the challenge for yourself on this one.  My prayer is that you succeed and excel far above and bkeyond what you set out to accomplish initially.

What is it that you're looking for; a list of song suggestions or how to take a song that has a lead and change it?

BTW, YOU have raised the bar by stating that "some of the best" gospel songs have leads. There are plenty out there that don't and will work for your setting.

But, I'm with LT on this one, I KNOW the setting you're in; it's going to be a challenge for you. Praying for ya, bruh!  ;)

i think i am looking for both some songs that dont have leads
i have listened to many many songs on my seach engine and the majority have leads and it seems like the really good ones have leads like through te storm safe in his arms the battle is not yours
a lot of mississippi mass stuff has leads
artists like dottie kim burrell the clark sisters theer stuf is great but it again has leads

so i would take any help really

a list would be great of some songs that dont have leads buit would still be good for an older masx choir nothing too contemporary

and some tips to converting a lead to a leadless song
especially the call and response type songs because the straight leads should be pretty easy just have the whole choir or ladies only sing the lead part in unison  i learned that from kirk franklin

You could do:
a lot of Kirk Franklin stuff (especially from his 'Rebirth' CD)

"Total Praise"
"All Hail King Jesus"
"Magnify Him" (I don't know who it's by but, for your setting, they'd love it I promise)
"Jesus Promised" (Chicago Mass Choir)
"He's working it out for your good" (Chicago Mass Choir)
"Take it Away" (Wilmington Chester Mass Choir)
"Do you know Him" (Hezekiah Walker & LFC, I think)

These are just a few, I'll have to check out my 'stash' and get back to you. Let me know if any of these work. Or, you could give me an idea of what your choir has done in the past.

Blessings to you, bruh!

Glorify Him
Magnify Him
Glorify Him

He is worthy to be praised
He is worthy to be praised

(Repeat as desired)

Bridge:
Hallelujah, Thank you, Jesus
Lift Him Up
Lift Him Up

repeat bridge

He is worthy to be praised
He is worthy to be praised

Vamp:

(Sop) Let's praise Him, let's praise Him (repeat)
(Alto) Magnify Him, Magnify the Lord (repeat)
(Tenors) He is worthy to be praised, He is worthy to be praised (repeat)

He is worthy to be praised
He is worthy to be praised

Reading IS fundamental!  J/K :D

It's an older, mass choir with a sprinkling of youth mixed in.

MrSparrow

thanks for the questions M. Sparrow
the average age groiup of my mass choir is 65 some of the members are pushing 80
a few of them just hit 70
we have two or three members in their 50's
i am bringing in some of my young people but even they are in their late thirties

so that is what I am working with

the congregation is mostly older too

but I m really trying to get music that will still attract younger people
at least some middle of the road stuff

we have another choir that has yet to join the fold and when they do we will get some more people in their 40's and 50's they like more of the contemporary stuff (wow gospel Cd 2 contemporary) if you know what I mean
they like gospels they like richard smallwood norman hutchins albertina wlaker
hawkins
but they also like hezekiah like faithful is our God
or sudenly they loved open the flood gates of heaven
To be or not to be that is the question you anwer when you pray practice and read your word

I knew you had an older choir but I didn't want to assume that this was the same choir you're dealing with.

Let's see... some senior choir stuff...

I'll be boc...

What's up Diverse....how about:

Send Up Judah.....Lord You Are Good...He Reigns......those are EASY and HOT!

........but I have a question....Instead of not having soloist, why not give the solo to a "NON-DIVA" ...it might send a stronger message.  Ya might have to work a little more with someone who's not used to doing solos, but that might serve the choir better in the long run.?.

......just an opinion.
I'd rather be imperfectly inspired, than to be perfectly entertained...

good point but it is more then just people having attitudes it is also about dependability
showing up to sing the song when it needs to be sung

but i will consider finding some other people who can lead.
thanks
