Major/Minor scales - pick or finger
« on: January 17, 2007, 09:22:57 AM »
I'm learning my pentonic scales, and i find it eaiser playing them w/o a pick... Do you usually do your run's (scales) with a pick or w/o a pick.  I'm still a beginner and i'm having so much fun playing the guitar.  Thanks for your help.

Learn to play with either.
Versatility is an asset and each way will offer unique sounds.
I will say this; if you haven't learned your diatonic scales yet then I'd encourage you to do that. Learn the major and minor diatonic scales and then you'll pretty much already know the pentatonic major and minor as they're contained within.
Also, and I can't stress this enough, practice your scales with either a metronome or drum machine/loop. Start slow and learn to play the scales smoothly without error, giving each note the same count and being consistent with the time between the notes.
All this little stuff will pay off BIG TIME in the long run, trust me.
Music theory is not always music reality.

I'll go back and forth in one song lol.  If I want to get that countrified-southern-rockish thing, I'll tuck my pick.  I also find that I can play these little slurry clusters with my thumb and fingers.  I guess I was inspird by Lindsey Buckingham in that way.
