This" New Gospel/Christian Music": What's "New" about it
« on: January 17, 2007, 11:54:05 AM »
We have had many threads on LGM about This new sound in Christian music. Some talk about the lack of this or that. Or how the music is too wordly. Or that is doesn't " sound" like Gospel.

Well I just went back and spent a few hours listening to the 1st and 2nd Winnans Albums and I have to be honest for it to be the 80's they had some stuff that still does not sound like " gospel" even today. But let somebody break out with "It's Been a Long Time Commin" or " The Question" the church would fall out.

Anyway so who are some artist that youthink in 20yrs we will look back and say " Now that was some good music". and who will the church finally appreciate even if it it much later.

Give your reason why and an example if you would like.

1st... Tonex, Lisa Mclendon, Izzy,

TONEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some of his music will be HOUSEHOLD CLASSICS 25 years from now!

(you know I gotta go there) Look at "Jesus Can Work It Out" (sorry MadeaT...had to). Dianne originally sang that in 1972 or '73 and IT IS STILL TEARING CHURCHES UP TO THIS DAY - REMIX OR NO REMIX!  "All In His Hands" is another one.

TRADITIONAL:  I can easily see Darrel Petties "Yes Lord" taking its place among the classics (not just because he's from Memphis).  Evelyn's "God Did It" is still making folks flip pews years and years and years and years later!  Hezekiah Walker's "Grateful"....that's a keeper for the next 30 at least!!!

CONTEMPORARY or just plain "out there":

I can see Smokey's "I Need You Now" and ESPECIALLY "God Is Able".  Neither of which "sound" gospel...but they minister.

Vicky's "Shake Yourself Loose" ain't going nowhere!  It's an instant classic!

Dorinda's "I'm Coming Out" and "I'm Still Here"!!!  Classics!!!

Mary Mary's "Yesterday".....instant classic!  We will still be crying to that one 50 years from now!!!

"Heaven" (which don't sound gospel at all) will be around at least another 100 years!

Some will disagree, but I don't see "The Struggle Is Over" dying out anytime soon (for the next 10 to 20)...

90% of Donald Lawrence's cuts are destined to be classics.

Honestly, I don't think there is a NEW sound...but you gotta remember...most people who call this stuff NEW were not around (or not old enough) in the 80's to hear the Winans or Take6 or the Clark Sisters.  "You Brought the Sunshine" was not technically Gospel (in its makeup)...but now they flip pews over that too!!!

CAN YOU COME TO MEMPHIS AND HAVE THIS CONVERSATION WITH MY GRANDDADDY BEFORE SUNDAY MORNING!!!???  GEESH!
