  • ME!!!!!!!

For writers, how do you all go about putting the music to your lyrics that you write?  Or do you put the lyrics to the music that you write?  Because I am a keyboardist, bassist, and percussionist, and vocalist, but in my group, I am the praise leader, and I have written lyrics to 3 songs so far, but I just don't know how to put the music to it.  So do y'all recommend that I write the music first, and then write the lyrics to the music from now on?  Or how do I put the music to the lyrics?  It seems like it should be easy, considering that I play the keys, and bass, but I don't know why it is so hard.  But I just don't want it to sound like a song that has already been made.  So could someone please help me out in this area?  How could my group and I do this thing?  And also, when you write a song, how do you separate it into 3-part harmony?  Please help me out,  because I AM YOUR BROTHER, and we are all here for the same purpose, so help my group and I out to help upbuild this Kingdom.  LOVE YOU ALL SIBLINGS!!!!  And thanks in advance! ;D

well i wouldn't consider myself as a real deal writer, but i am basically a instrumental composer (make up songs with no lyrics, freestyle basically).
Well for me, it will work out if i create the song first, and then make the lyrics. This may sound weird, but it kind of works for me. I make a fast song or slow song and then i add the appropriate lyrics. It will probably work for you too, because since you have the ideal of how the song sounds like (since you have the music created), it will be much easier to create lyrics.

Some people write out lyrics and then create song. Here is what i interpret: Praise songs (most of them, not all) are upbeat, fast-paced songs while worship songs are slow and smooth running. If your lyrics talks about giving praise to God & talk about all the goodness of God, etc, i would put that in the praise songs category. If your lyrics talks about worshiping God & lifting up His name & it talks about Jesus making a sacrifice by dying on the cross, etc, then i would put that in the worship song category.

But this is not always the case; praise songs can be slow, and worship songs can be fast.

The best thing to do is to read your lyrics and examine it. What does it remind you of? What are the emotions? If the lyrics are sad or it makes people want to think or meditate, then you might as well put it as a slow song. If the lyrics are uplifting and joyness, then put it as a fast song.

Now it is quite difficult to make the song not sound like any other song, but it is okay if a little part of the song sounds like one of the famous gospel songs. I would advise you to first try and create a melody of your own and make sure the lyrics connect to the melody. And, in order to add the singing parts: soprano, alto and tenor, just make the chords from the melody. Most of the songs' melodies are sung by sopranos, but in some cases, it is sung by alto.

For example, if the melody is C, E, G, then the chords can be Cmajor, Emajor, Gmajor. Also, you have to know how to invert the chords, just in case you want inversion.

Hope this information helps

Personally, lyrics come first.  I've always bkeen like that.  Much respect for bkeing able to play, so you can do YOUR OWN music.  I'm not THAT fortunate.  I can hear it, but I have no training whatsoever.

I don't post much, even though I would like to, but when I read your post I decided that I should definitely respond since God has been doing this awesome thing in my life. I have this friend that can write some wonderful anointed songs with out music. The music would be in him, but because he wasn't a musician, he couldn't put the music with the song. I saw how God would use him, and I would be like, man I can't write songs, I wish I could. In this last year or so, God has been dropping songs in my spirit like never before! Not only because I desired to write, but because it was in His will for me to write songs. In my personal experience, a lot of times I would hear music, and God would began to give me words. The music I hear could be from somebody playing it, or I will just have this tune in my head. Then there are times when God would just drop words in my head, and I wouldn't necessarily hear any music, but He later finishes the job by allowing me to be connected with someone who can put the music to what I heard. The point I'm trying to make is, song writing is a gift from God. You have to have the desire to want to write (which I see you do!) and then you have to pray about it. The most perfect song you could write would be a song given to you from the Father Himself!! I promise you dude, start praying about it and believe God, then you will see exactly what I'm talking about. Even though songs don't pour out of me like they do Kirk Franklin, I do know that everytime God gives me a song, he gives me a song!! A song thats highly anointed, a song that will minister to His people. A song of Deliverance (sometimes), Praise ( sometimes), Worship ( most of the time). Just whatever He wants you to say. I am praise and worship leader at the ministry I attend, and lately I can truely say that God has been pouring out His spirit on Us (The Praise Team) As far as harmony goes, I feel like if your having trouble with harmony, pray and ask God to give you an ear to hear the individual notes, but in the mean time, maybe you have someone in your group that can help you out with putting harmony in your songs.

I know i took an extra long time to say, Pray about it and trust God, but believe me IT WORKS!!!!

There is no formula for songwriting.  Each of us have various personalities and strengths.  After you write your lyrics, you must decide on a melody.  Many times keyboardists jump from the lyrics to improvisational chords, when in reality, they need to determine a simple melody and then build chords around that melody.  Remember, if a song is not playable or worse, not singleable, it will be limited to you being the only one who can use it.  I encourage you to keep things as simple as possible.  A good rule of thumb also is to do two versions---one with simple chords and basic harmonies, and a second version that is the "souped up" form  having all your intricate harmonies, rythms, and progressions.  This will allow small churches with less talented singers to also use your material.  If they hear it and it sounds too complicated initially, they will shy away from it.

I would be glad to converse with you more.  I was taught by the man who wrote "For God So Loved the World" which was recorded by Vanessa Bell Armstrong and James Cleveland's GMWA back in 1982 and for the 30th Anniversary recording.  So in college songwriting was a big part of our training.

Send me a private message if you want to talk further and we can go from there.

Sincerely,

Pastor Forster
