« on: January 22, 2007, 08:56:11 PM »
I've checked past forums in which practicing on pillows has been of discussion..... My question is,what is the a right way to practice or build up your chops using pillows and what is the wrong way???

i actually got faster by just practicing to the metronome starting slow and going up by 2 bpm. when i reach a point where i cant go faster i slow it down and go up by 1 bpm.

i personally dont agree with the pillow thing because it can get you down the wrong road as far as technique because you become so used to gripping the sticks tight that you over tax your muscles instead of being relaxed and using the rebound

...I agree with "drumz". Using the pillows too much can get you seriously hurt anyway.  You should always practice to a metronome and the second thing is that you should pay more attention to letting the "Stick Rebound" and you doing less of the work rather than you picking it up and putting it down which is what you do with a pillow.  That's the Contemporary way of doing things.  Let the stick do what it needs to do.  I'm really starting to think that practicing on pillows is just "wrong" period.

...What has helped me out a lot is working with this practice pad called the "E-pad".  It has a foam which absorbs some of the stroke but not all.  It gives you the feel that you get when you do your rolls or fills on the floor toms.  I work out with my regular HQ and then swith to the E-pad.  Then I get on the kit for a while so I play on 3 different surfaces and pay close attention to my movements and the rebounds.

...try that man.  Get away from those pillows and stick to the E-pad, HQ pad and drumheads.  Use the metronome and monitor your progress as "drumz" stated.  God bless.
