Horns and Piano at one time
« on: January 24, 2007, 03:12:07 PM »
Has anyone had to play horns and piano at one time?

Hi!  I do it every week.  It's a little challenging but it can be done.  You can hit a chord on the keyboard, leave it sustained, do a little run on your sax, then release and change chords when appropriate.  It's just a little more challenging with the organ, however, since a real organ doesn't have a sustain pedal.  You pretty much have to intermittently do organ runs and fade out when you want to come in on the sax, or you can do organ all the time with your right hand and a limited amount of notes on the sax with your left hand.  Since neither instrument is playing the melody of the song all the way through, it's quite do-able and it can sound very good.  Sometimes we have to do what we have to do when there are fewer musicians than instruments!  (Not to mention, it's sometimes kind of fun when you have people scratching their heads wondering how in the world you do it!  LOL!)

Yeah, that is true. I don't know if anyone listen to quartet music on here but we had to sing on the Jackson Southernairs and anniversary and i was playing horns and piano at the same time and people was looking at me like they was suprised. But i'm like the youngest musician on the chicago quartet set that i know of. But yeah i was just getting some out look from somebory else. Thanks for your comment.

That's impressive, I've played one at a time before, but never at the same time.

Well, now, I don't know how impressive it would be if you heard MY attempts.  The author of this thread probably does this a hundred times better than I do!  It's just a means to an end, really.  When you need a fuller sound, only have a handful of folks on the stage, you get pretty desperate and therefore creative! ;D
