Going to chicago ...
« on: January 30, 2007, 09:30:53 PM »
Will be in Chicago for a week on business - during my free time I would like to visit a few bass stores.  Can anyone recommend a good music to visit?

Thank you,

There are several Guitar Centers with the usual stuff. The one on 73rd and Cicero probably has the best bass selection. Lots of used high end stuff- Lakland, MTD (they have the actual one that was on the cover of Bass Player mag), Bolin, LowEnd jazz, and some others I can't think of right now. Plus the usual Spectors, Warwicks, etc. I would recommend that you get to BassClub Chicago. It is in Alsip, IL. It is just outside Chicago at 12213 S. Cicero. It is a small shop that carries a ton of high end gear-lots of Laklands, Sadowsky, Spector, Ken Smith, Fodera, Modulus, Elrick, Eden Aguilar, and more. The owner is a really cool guy that will let you play anything there. Check out their websitewww.bassclubchicago.com. There's also Make'n Music but I would not recommend them-very snobby. Another small shop is Musicians Network at 5500 N Clark.

Yes, most of them leave a lot to be desired. Its a shame that a lot of the time they are your only option. I guess it just depends on when you are there. I try to avoid when they are very busy. I find that I'm more knowledgeable about the products than any of them are so they tend to listen to me rather than me listening to them. It also helps that my church is a regular customer.

yeah, can you believe that a guy told me that slapping on a B string isn't a good idea and that it wasn't made to be slapped.

I just looked at him and let him keep talking.
