Switchfoot
« on: January 24, 2007, 10:18:37 PM »
Hey gang!!!

I know it's strange to see me posting on the guitar forum, but here it is.  LOL

I wanted to share a short video clip of my daughter playing a song she's learning by Switchfoot.  She's been takn guitar lessons for almost a year now (formal lessons began this past summer).  She's 15½ yrs old and is learning this song for an upcoming recital.  This would be her second public performance.  Her first was on youth day playing guitar with my oldest daughter while the youth choir sang.  Please, let me know what you think of her skills, what she needs to work on (I think muting is one technique that needs to be improved), any tips and encouraging words.  I don't know too many of the guitarist on LGM, but Uriah, I would love to hear from you as well.  ;D

This isn't the best i've heard her play this song and the clip is only available for a short time.  When she gets better at this song, we'll post a permanent video clip.

Thanks for your feedback!

That's not bad at all. Yes, she does need to refine her muting, especially between chords. And she needs to really get the chord transitions down clean.
Both of these will come with time and discipline.
Muting the strings comes in very subtle ways of using both left and right hands/fingers to cover the strings and usually the least amount of movement possible to mute the strings is the goal.
For the chord changes, if she slows down just a bit (for practice purposes) and concetrates on getting her fingers into position, she'll gradually speed up to tempo and the changes will be clean.

What I hear that's good: her strum seems to be close to the original song and it in-time (when she nails the chord). She seems to have limber fingers and she's attempting chords beyong the open position kind.
That's all good stuff.

gtrdave ... thanks for your input!!  It's amazing, because i've heard her play this song much better then lastnight.  I could tell she was a bit nervous because I was recording her.  The good thing is, she realizes that she has to get pass that and she is willing for me to record her doing that song again as well as others so she can post them on her online profile.  One of her dreams is to start her own christian rock band.

Oh... for those not familiar with the song ... here's a 1 min. clip of the original:  http://www.fmdminc.org/CK/switchfoot-theloser.wav

Cool ... thanks Rown.  I'll pass that on to her.  You are right, she should practice better posture.  I'll help her with that.  I know what you mean about Prince, but I'll have her watch the guitar player @ my church vs Prince any day.  He has very good posture and is very experienced (over 20 yrs).   :) ;)

Ok... Here's the video clip my daughter is ok with.  She slowed it down a bit, which made it easier to transition from chord to chord.  I also had her stand up instead of sitting like before.

Blessings,
Lady

That was tighter. Now, if she keeps that tempo for a little while and keeps the chord changes clean, she'll speed up in no time.

Now she's got to kick on that overdrive for the intro and then switch to the clean for the verse.  ;D

I dig the bass line in that tune, too. Tim Foreman adds so much to the band. He is NOT a root note player at all...  8)

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and all ... my daughter has read them all and appreciates what you've posted.  If you don't mind, please post a comment on her youtube video (the last link I posted yesterday).

jlynnb1, you are so right, everyone should practice with a metronome or drum machine.  I too fail to do so at times.  Currently she doesn't practice with either.  I'll be sure she incorporates that into her practice routine.  For this particular song sometimes she practices with the actual song.  At this stage, we'll stick to the metronome, watch her accuracy & speed build, then we'll move to actually playing with the song.

Yep!!!   ;D :D   That's my daughter for ya.  She loves that rock sound, thus her desire to have an electric guitar vs acoustic

Me too Dave!!  :)

yeah, if she'll set the metronome 10-15 beats slower than the original (ar at a speed that she can play it perfectly), then bump the metronome up a few BPM at a time(being sure to have it TIGHT at each new tempo), she'll have it locked down in no time.

Thanks Rown.  That's a neat metronome.  We do have one, but it's not as interesting as this one.   :)
