How to break a bad habit??????
« on: February 08, 2007, 12:35:28 AM »
....ok, I dont know if its a "bad" habit but I would like to break it.

I pretty much learned on my own and developed a habit of playing with only one finger during shouts as opposed to 2 like I see other people doing. Somebody told me that Im limiting my self speed-wise by only plucking with one finger at a time.

I do notice that my fingers get tired out after only a few min's so I disguise it by slowing down and doing other stuff.

So what are some exercises that can be done to practice my coordination on playing with 2 fingers?

Give a man chords to a song, you help him for a day. Teach him theory and you help forever!!!

This is one of those debates that verys,I use my thumb for this reason,it's bigger and can hit the string solid to get a hard sound.Playing with 2 fingers  is good to play faster. The world greatest bass player used 1 finger the index only.He could play things lot of todays players can't play with 2 finger. Just remember, you do not have to play fast on bass to sound good or stand out.
Because if you're Playing in Church for God, it's not about us who play the music. It's about Gods Message and warming the hearts of the listeners with music support for the singers

There's a time and place for everything and opinions change from person to person. So,if it works for you do it.
This is one of these debates that falls under,by using a pick is that better,by using  2 fingers is that better,by using 3  to 4 finger is that better or thumb.
But, I would work on Dex with this one finger learn to hammer-On also will take some pressure away from the plucking finger.
Just my take on this
God Bless

If you want to break it then practice with 2. My opinion the only thing that might be bad about this is maybe later in your life you could develop joint problems in that one finger by not sharing the work with both fingers.

My pointer is faster then my pointer, middle. I can not pull off triplets with pointer/middle no matter how hard I try. My pointer alone can do it.

it don't matter wich finger you play with as long as your comfortable.  i play with my pointer finger the most. but when i play fast music i play with two fingers.

James Jamerson played with only one finger...straight up!  One of the most influencial players in modern music and one of my personal favorites.

I personally pluck with my forefinger, middle and wedding ring finger (depending on how fast I am playing or if I am playing chords).  When it comes to tapping I pretty much use all my fingers...including my thumbs.  Don't be put off by that.  That has come from a lot of years of practicing and expansion of my skills.  When I first picked up a bass I only used one finger.  I still do that sometimes as a technique.  I kinda run the tip of my finger over the the string and throw it back and forth like if I was using a pick.  Anyway, the more confident and skilled you become you will naturally start to introduce a second finger and some time afterwards maybe a third.  Its not the 'be all and end all'.  If you can kick butt using one finger like our much missed friend James Jamerson then you don't have much to worry about.  MikeGee did bring up a good point though with fatigue just using one finger and thats worth taking into account.  Bass players suffer terribly from arthritis and repetative strain, so keep those fingers in good condition.
