The same thing with DW and PDP. Although there are differences in the specs of these two brands, DW openly admits that they use the same wood for both companies. Now there are some companies whose production process is expensive and you end up paying for it. But can our ears REALLY tell us whether what we're playing cost $300 or $3000? Especially with all of the post-recording eq's and FX that are available nowadays? And if we learn how to make what we have live up to its potential?

...I agree with you on this: Same wood on both PDP and DW? Yes, it's Maple.  Same "Quality of wood"? Nope.  Not even close.  There is a reason why PDP is PDP and Drum Workshop is DW.  ;)

I guess what we really need to refer back to is the budget mentioned in the original post. There's no reason to tell him about the 6x14 Noble and Cooley metal alloy snare if he only has $100. The snare I mentioned is a great sounding snare (not just for the price) and it is within that original budget. It's under $100, and with the proper head choice, its sound clean and crisp (I believe these were the original desired specifications). Let's try not to scare anybody away.

No one recommended a high end drum - you were the one that threw out this statement, which was the catalyst for this discussion:

YOU DO NOT (I repeat) DO NOT have to spend $300 to get a great sounding snare!! All of my snares sound great. And I only have 1 $300+ snare (Mapex Black Panther). Don't trust the hype and spend all your money. Learn how to manipulate what you have in order to get the sound you want!! Don't get into the big money game. It's not worth it.

I recommended the Pulse snare, which is now $29 or so dollars as well as eBay (I'd say that you could probably 'catch' some great deals on there).

I also agreed with you on the quote of

YOU DO NOT (I repeat) DO NOT have to spend $300 to get a great sounding snare!!

However, I did also touch on a few additional variables.

You do get what you pay for - it's a mixed percentage of build quality and sound quality.  You are correct by stating that an expensive snare does not automatically equate to a great sounding drum.  It is in the head selection and tuning, not to mention the player's 'touch'.

YOU DID NOT JUST SAY APEX TV... Hilariious. LOL.

I see both sides, you do get what you pay for. You are an expert, surely there is a middle ground somewhere...

Yeah, the famous Apex!   ;D  There is a middle ground, and that is where build quality comes into play.  Just as snareman has stated, you don't have to spend big bucks to get a quality snare.  Sometimes, the cheaper items (and this is from actually inspecting the product, not by some mindless marketing drivel that is shoved into our minds) are not built as well as the products that may cost a little more.

Price point question ("What makes a $500 snare worth $500?") - I would say a combination of production costs, materials used and other factors that we may not be aware of.  Is it right?  I would say no, but then I can't do anything to control those costs.  The thing that I look for (amongst sound quality, which is always subjective from one drummer to another) is build quality.

All this talk about snares... the drummer (13 year old).... BROKE THAT SNARE LAST NIGHT... showing off to one of his friends, and this boy tied a belt around one of the lugs..... and stood on TOP OF A CAR and acted like he was in Drumline... and the belt unbuckled and the snare fell on the ground... He is going to need a proctologist when I get through with him.

When I get to rehearsal tomorrow night I will... In the mean time, I need to get the Baptist Trustees of mine to spot some fundage on a new snare... We sing at some church in Newport News on Friday night.

No one recommended a high end drum - you were the one that threw out this statement, which was the catalyst for this discussion:

Maybe things got a little confusing, but I wasn't referring to anything you posted about price. However, BX told the guy (in her initial reply) that he was going to have to spend a pretty good amount of money to get a good snare. It was actually her comment that I was referring to. Your reply about the Pulse snare was what the guy was looking for. It's just that I JUST had a run-in with one of those snares this weekend.

I do agree with you about basing our opinions and preferences on ACTUAL experiences with the products rather than what the PAID advertisers try to sway us into believing. You make very valid points. Especially about the build quality. That's not usually one of my concerns, though. I treat all of my snares like they cost me $1000. I've never had a shell to crack, I don't throw them around, I don't leave them in extreme cold or heat. I don't let dust and dirt build up on them. But I LIKE pampering them. That's just one of my things. So I don't mind putting in the extra care as opposed to the extra money. But I DO see your point. I guess it just depends on what you need, want, and what's easiest for the individual.

...I agree with you on this: Same wood on both PDP and DW? Yes, it's Maple.  Same "Quality of wood"? Nope.  Not even close.  There is a reason why PDP is PDP and Drum Workshop is DW.  ;)

I understand what you mean. It's just that I can get my PDP FS kit to sound just as good as a DW kit. I know because it already sounds 200% better than Tony Royster's on his "Pure Energy" video. And that's with old heads!! ;D

My point is really, It depends on whose hands the drum key is in. Now I'm not crazy, I know I can't get that same sound from a First Act kit from Wal-Mart!! But I've tuned some $100 kid's sets before and they sang! It's all about WORKING until your ears thank you, not SPENDING until your wallet hates you.

...this is the thing about Tony's tom sound on that DVD.  Those heads were brand new.  That means that they were not even broken in yet.  Evans G2 Coateds need some breakin' in time so that they can sound good.  If you hear D. Chambers kit on Common Ground, the toms also had a few crazy overtones.  I personally do not recommend anyone to buy a fresh pair of heads the same day you're going to do a recording or a live venue because it'll be a tuning nightmare for you.  Buy them earlier in the week and get some playing time on 'em before the recording or venue.  That way they are broken in.

Sidenote: Tony should've used the G2 Clears on his DVD anyway.  His Common Ground kit sounded 100 times better than the Pure Energy kit.  To me anyway. :-\

Here, here. I have a session at the end of this month. I just went this weekend to buy new heads, and I'll be putting them on probably next week sometime. That would be a tragedy.

I haven't seen the Common Ground video, but I hope anything sounds better than that Pure Energy stuff. It just threw me, because I expected his drums to sound better. Especially DWs.
