Help me out
« on: February 14, 2007, 01:08:58 PM »
Hello brothers and sisters.  I have a question for you all.  First, I am a beginner who has been playing at my church for about a year.  The other day we were practicing for a concert, and there were a couple of other bass players that were invited to play with the choir.  Both the guys were more advanced than I am.  While I could play every song that they played, my playing did not sound as full as theirs.  I was talking to one guy who was giving me some pointers on playing.  He told me to" Play in the Pocket".  After he said that he was called to do something else, and we never finished the conversation.  Can you all explain to me what that means.
Praise Is What I Do.

Playing in the pocket is when you are the drummer lock into a groove.  You two are laying the foundation for which other instruments build on.  You are not doing all the crazy licks and runs.  That's the hardest thing to do is lock in a groove and stay in the pocket.
Notice in this clip, at the beginning, they both establish a pocket then around the 1:38 mark, the bassist steps outside the pocket and begins to solo.

Hope this was helpful.

There are ways to teach yourself and force youto play in the pocket. The best two are to play with thumb only and raise your string height higher than they are now.Don't slap with your thumb.

I wouldn't say that those are the best ways to play in the pocket.  I play with my index and middle fingers and have my strings close, and I can groove and play in the pocket all day.  Now, playing with high or low strings, and thumb or fingers is all personal preference.

I agree with ddwilkins, playing in the pocket is more of a matter of when notes are played (timing) then how they are played (technique).
