Racks or stands?
« on: February 14, 2007, 11:55:39 AM »
Sup ya'll I got this topic from another drummers forum I'm on but I think it's a good question. When playing and setting up for a gig, do you prefer racks or stands? Why or why not?

...to answer your question directly, I prefer stands for my personal kit.

...I ordered a rack for church as you can tell in my avatar and when I go to other churches to play, I use stands.  I've been taking a four piece set up so all I need is stands.

I've been using a Pearl brand rack for almost 12 years now.  I think it simplifies setup and breakdown with spending less time getting that stand in just the right spot.  And you save a little weight in your hardware bag/case too.  I'm about to replace my current rack with one of the new Pearl Icon racks that break down.
When you've done your very best, do even better.

Racks are ugly and I feel caged in when I play them.  I understand why people like them because it is extremely consistent to set up your gear.  The down side is that they take up so much space....  and they are UGLY!

Thats my two cents.

I WOULD PERFER A RACK. I THINK SO BECAUSE, IT TAKES UP ALOT LESS SPACE THAN STANDS. MY DREAM KIT WOULD PROBABLY BE A 6 OR 7 PIECE SO, I KNOW JUST THE TOM STANDS WOULD TAKE UP ALOT OF SPACE. BUT IF EVERYTHING WERE ON A RACK ALL YOU WOULD HAVE TO DO IS CLAMP EVERYTHING ON.

AND, I'VE HEARD RACKS ARE ALOT MORE USEFUL IN TOURING SITUATIONS. YOU CAN KEEP ALL OF YOUR CLAMPS LOCKED ON THE RACK AND JUST REMOVE YOUR DRUMS AND CYMBALS AND YOUR READY TO PACK UP.

SO I WOULD HAVE TO GO WITH RACKS.

Actually... contrary to popular belief - you can get your stands in the right spot everytime...

All you need is a permanent drum carpet & duct tape. ;D

...you're right about it taking up space.  We use the Pearl Icon Curve rack with the curved side rack and that joka is huge!!!  It's not ugly though. :P  It's just bulky to me.

I have to stands because it gives me more flexibilty. I used a rack for this show i just did in Colorado, it was horrible. I had to adjust my seat higher than usual.
