JUST DONT PLAY AT ALL. You defanatley can not play it in the wrong key. WHEN you learn all the scales and the chords of the keys that you arent fluent in, you can play soft until you pick it up and then play basic chords and riffs.

But if you arent confident, there is nothing wrong with not playing. People cant expect you to play songs you've never heard

DONT PLAY AT ALL

But heres some good learning tools..

when u learn the song... dont jus learn the chords, learn the words... sometimes it may be a song and they may be jackin it up... IT HAPPENS

Study the movement of singers if u have a good singer they can give you certain leading tones into the next chord

if u flat out dont kno then dont play... be humble ask them after service what song was that bcuz if its sanged once it can be sang again .... especially if the CHURCH knows it...

Id rather be humble and dumb than arrogant and WRONG and loud.....  Thats disturbing the atmosphere....

SLIDE OFF THE ORGAN AND UNPLUG THE MICROPHONE!!!! just playing

BUT SERIOUSLY, LIKE EVERYONE ELSE SAID, DON'T PLAY.

AND I ASSUME THAT YOUR TALKING ABOUT IF YOUR IN A SPECIAL SERVICE OR A MUSICIAL OR SOMETHING RIGHT?
BECAUSE, AS A MUSICIAL DIRECTOR/M.O.M. THERE SHOULD NEVER BE A SONG SUNG IN REGULAR SERVICE THAT ANY OF THE MUSICIANS DONT KNOW! UNLESS ITS THE TESTIMONY PORTION OF THE SERVICE (which virtually NO ONE has anymore) EVERY SONG SHOULD BE PLANNED AHEAD BEFORE YOU EVEN TURN THE ORGAN ON!

IF YOU ARE IN A TYPE OF SERVICE WERE UNEXPECTED SONGS CAN POP UP; YOU SHOULD BE WELL EQUIPED ENOUGH TO FAKE A SONG IF YOU GONNA BE PLAYING THE ORGAN THE WHOLE SERVICE!

I CAN SPEAK ON THIS TOPIC BECAUSE I PLAY, BUT I DON'T PLAY.  SO WHEN PEOPLE GO TO SONGS THAT I HAVEN'T REALLY REHEARSED, OR KNOW AT ALL, I JUST PLAY BASIC CHORDS.  YOU CAN'T JUST SIT THERE AND NOT PLAY, SOMETIMES THE ANOINTING DEMANDS YOU AND YOU NEED TO HELP THAT PERSON OUT.  YOU PLAYING COULD MEAN SOMEONES DELIVERANCE.  BUT YEAH, I SAY JUST PLAY VERY BASIC CHORDS, OR CHORDS THAT YOU CAN HOLD FOR MEASURES, THAT GO WITH THE SONG.

A smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.

Oh yes you can.  What if your basic chords are hot garbage and messes up the flow of the song?  People have been singing acapella for years and it has worked out great.  If you can fake it or follow with some nice chords, then that's fine.  If not, then don't play anything and jump in after they done singing.

On a side note, I personally feel that if you can't sound good w/out music, then you should question your calling in singing.

True. Donnie Mcklurken came to uor chuch one sunday, and didnt bring hs musicians, so the musicians played the songs that they knew, and stopped playing when he sang some songs, they've never heard.

And DM is known for putting musicians on blast, so it was probaly in thier best interest to stop playing, instead of tying to be a know it all fearless musician

AMEN!!!

I would rather sing without music ANY day versus someone trying to play and really hindering  the spirit.

My advice is DO NOT PLAY!!!
