Bass Pedal Technique?
« on: March 12, 2007, 12:10:50 PM »
This question is mostly for the single pedal players. What particular technique do you use to achieve the fast doubles usually asociated with gospel players? I havnt seen many folks using the heel-toe method and, trying it myself, it was a bit too much leg motion for me. I hear talking about the slide motion but I havnt actually seen for myself what exactly this technique entails.

The reason I ask is, I think I have an unusual way of playing the pedal that I sort of came accross by accident. Its hard to describe but Im gonna try to video what Im doing tonight and put it up here. Im not sure if I have invented my own technique or if other players out there are doing the same thing and theres a name for my technique. What I mean to say, is the technique I use mine, or did I rip it from somewhere else lol?

Any comments or descriptions of your own technique would be really helpful to figure out what Im doing. I'll get a video of my foot on here asap in order to describe my technique better.

Ya, post your clip. that will allow for comment and knowledge on what you are referring to. I try, and I do mean try to use Jojo's technique. I find it to be the easiest for me. Example:

Thanks  for the suggestions guys. Heres a vieo of what Im using

Its a sort of sliding motion using the sweet spot to get enough bounce for the second note when playing doubles. I do not use my heel but rather make the first note on the sweet spot and the second note at the top of the pedal board. Both notes are made using the ball of my foot using my ankle.

If someone can tell me what this technique is called, whether Im doing it correctly or if I just made it up I would be most appreciative. Any info you have is helpful to me.

Yeah check out Jojo Mayer's clip too.

Looks very similar to his foot technique. It's on his drummerworld page when he had big hair. Forgot the name of the clip too.

Good stuff.

When God annointed me with the gift of playing, and I search for techniques to advance to the Organ, the way I was instructed was to used the toe-heal method, it works for me, even I do better runs with my foot, without getting tangle up!!!!!!!

Definitely! I like your technique cloud. It seems like almost a reverse style of Chris Adler...

Hmm thats an interesting technique chris adler has. It does look like hes using more of his heel than I do though, should have done my video from the side, perhaps I'll do another one with a different angle. The closest thing Ive found is the Slide technique that theres a few videos of on youtube, still looks like they are using a bit of heel though.

Does anyone here use the Slide Technique and if so, are you using your heel or just your toes?

The technique you are using is the slide technique. it is not as energy effecient as the hill toe or the Moeller for the feet (Michael Packer-L.A. Music Academy) but it get the job done for a lot of people. Jeff Pocaro used the slide technique. Steve Smith demonstrates several techniques on his last vid. I suggest you start there and also check out Michael Packer's DVD and Matt Ritter's DVD.

Anytime you can eliminate loosing contact with the foot board you are using energy more effeciently.
