EVANS EMAD 2, EVANS EMAD RESO & EVANS EC REVERSE DOT...
« on: February 28, 2007, 07:30:35 AM »
OK, after a countless amount of months, I finally took the time to replace the heads on my kit.
My 22x20 kick is sweet. I love it, however, It falls under the category of a little overpowering at times...So I wanted a mellow head. I went with the EMAD 2 and Emad Reso. I set the heads, finger tightened them and tuned top and bottom to about 2 - 2 1/2 turns. WOW!!!  :o :o :o :o :o I am in love with the EMAD product and the EMAD 2 is just even better, in my opinion. I have a much deeper tone with a thump that you can feel in your throat, however, it is in no way overwhelming. The volume was cut by about 50%. You dont hear the kick anymore, you feel it. and to me, thats what a kick is supposed to be. However, I do not feel that the EMAD 2 would be suitable for a smaller kick. I think it would choke it out. JMHO.

Moving right along: Coated G2's on the 10,12 and 16. I forgot how nice G2's sounded! haha. They really rounded out the tones on my toms. they are very melodioc now.

I dont think I have heard anyone give their thought on this head, from experience. I must say, after divorcing hydraulics last year, I was extremely skeptic concerning this head. I felt it was going to kill my drum too much. I decided to stick it on my MHX Snare. Footnote: MHX formerly had a Evans Genera dry head with a gl 500 snare side. Although I loved the sound of my snare, it was a little too open for me. But I didnt want to go with a focused head due to a fear of losing the warmth that this snare was built for. That is my reason for choosing the EC. So to cut this novel now, the head is nice. I will wait for a few weeks to reserve complete judgement but so far, I am in love. It appears that it tuned down the overtones in all the right places while remaining warm and lively. I mean, no choking whatsoever! And now, my snare is very focused. the sound is precise and crisp. Now mind you, I tune fairly loose. Its at about 2 1/2 turns both sides. Thats just my preference. Someone that tunes tight, might not want this head, I think at high tension it could have the tendency to choke. Above all though, I love the sticking ability on this snare. It feels good to play it! haha

Thats it.

God Bless.

...lol.

...The EMAD on the 20" kick is the way to go.  EMAD II's are too much control for a 20".  You did good on the kick.  I bet that joka sounds ferocious.

Indeed it does! Your opinion on the 20" and so forth match my exact thoughts. What kick head are you using these days?

I gotta disagree on that one. It depends on the drum and how it's tuned. I had one on my DW 18"x20" and it did the job. I also put one on my cousin's Export 20". i tried a few different tunings. It didn't choke the drums at all. Just my experiences......

...yeah well I should've specified myself.  I know the style of music that "E" is playing so the EMAD will do the trick for him.  The EMAD II would've also done the trick for "E" but without the thick ring or even the thinner ring.  Either way, I'm a fan of the EMAD on 20" kicks versus the EMAD II.  I have an EMAD II on the set at church as you can seel in my Avatar but I will be making the switch to the EMAD or PowerStroke III head just for cosmetic reasons.  I actually haven't even tried it without the rings so I'm definetly doing that tonight at rehearsal. 8)
