umm bugs i hear what your saying about cadences
and aljeries I hear you too BUUUT!
what im trying to say is, say for instance a soloist was singing byron cages " never too busy" and they are at the beginning of the song singing "as you climb the ladder of success and the blessings begin to pour in"...... while they are saying that i hear the organist playing the chords but he's not playing it word for word its like a progression he's doing and its ugggh im confusing myself hopefully you understand if not thanks anyway!:D
ok, now it is exactly as i said,,,now as i said in earlier post, their are in my opinion 5 basic walks..........but now, i clearly know what you're talking about, and it is the same.......EXCEPT! in that paticular example, the organist is ( in my opinio ) doing a 7 - 3 - 6 progression....on that opening, and the thing about it, is the voiceing in his right hand, is what gives it that sound, but he is opening with a 7-3-6, on his way to a 2-6 to 2 type walk, then goes to the 5 an finishes it on the 1 setting up to do it agian, except with different voicings in the right hand......
now!....their 4 basic progressions.....aside from those walks i refered to earlier......they are;
2-5-1......5-1-4......7-3-6......3-6-2....
now;
if you look at what i wrote earlier, this is almost like it, except, in these, the progressions move in what is known as fourths....in otherwords, each chord is going to form a chord off of a note or scale degree four scale degrees away, ex;
C/CEG.... WILL MOVE TO THE C MAJOR SCALE DEGREES 4 = F/FAC....
IN THE EXAMPLE, THE CHORD HAS MOVED A FOURTH AWAY,,,,, SO NOW,BACK TO YOUR SONG OF CHOICE....
THE ORGANIST IS USEING THE 7-3-6 PROGRESSION, HE THEN CHANGES THE CHORDS IN HIS RIGHT HAND, AND CHOPS THE CHORDS UP AS HE GOES, BUT IN HIS MAIN HE ALREADY KNOWS THE DIRECTION OF THE SONG....AND ULTIMATELY USES THOSE PROGRESSIONS I SPOKE OF TO GET BACK...NOW IM NOT REALLY GOING INTO BREAKING DOWN HIS CHORDS BECAUSE, YOUR QUESTION REALLY DEALS WITH, WHAT THE MUSICIAN IS ACTUALLY DOING, IT IS IN FACT " CHOPPING, OR BREAKING UP THE PROGRESSION, OR CALL IT SPACING, " IT IS A PROGRESSION HE IS DOING THE CHOPPING TO, AND IN MY TERMINOLOGY OF A WALK, NO IT ISNT A WALK......
BUT YOU CAN CHOP UP A WALK, AS WELL AS A PROGRESSION! THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS WHEN YOU KNOW WHERE YOU GOING, IT CAN BE HIGHLY EFFECTIVE......
I KNOW THIS WAS AT LENGTH, BUT I DO BELIEVE THIS GIVES YOU A CLEARER UNDERSTANDING OF THE BOARD AS WELL AS YOUR ANSWER, AND GIVES YOU A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO USE WHAT YOU ALREADY KNOW!!!!!
ALSO; LAST THING.....THEIR ARE TWO STYLES OF PLAYING, 1) IS WHEN YOU PLAY WORD FOR WORD, YOU CAN STILL USE A WALK OR ONE OF THE BASIC PROGRESSIONS....BUT YOU CHORD WILL NEED TO LINE UP WITH THE PERSON , AND MOST MUSICIANS USUALLY GO THE MELODY WAY, WHICH WILL MAKE YOU SOUND LIKE THE VOICE.
2) IS WHEN YOU PLAY TO ACCOMPANY, AND THIS IS A MORE COMMON STYLE OF PLAYING IN GOSPEL MUSIC OF TODAY, THE CHORDS ARE NOT WITH OR ON THE MELODY, BUT IN FACT TEND TO PLAY AROUND THE MELODY, THSES TYPE OF CHORDS ARE MOR COLORFUL AND FORMA TYPE OF BED FOR THE MELODY, AND IN ESSENC LEAVES A GREATER RESPONSIBLITIY TO THE SOLOIST.....THIS STYLE IS MORE FOR A SOLOIST IN MY OPINION......BECAUSE IF THE SOLOIST CAN REALLY LET IT GO, THIS STYLE OF PLAYING WILL ALLOW THEM TO BE HEARD......SO YA BETTER NOT CRACK..........LOL
EX; Let’s look at some common prgressions; done the way I do them……..
Key;Ab
CHORDED BY ALGIERES
LH = LEFT HAND
RH = RIGHT HAND
…… = CONTINUATION OF CHORD
( # ) = FLATTED NBR,
OK LET’S GET STARTED….
THIS IS KNOWN AS A 1 TO THE 4 WALK AND IT’S COMMON, BUT NOT SO MUCH LIKE THIS….THIS IS HOW I MIGHT DO IT……I HAVE SEVERAL WAYS!!!!
LH/RH
AbCEb/GBbCEb – 1
BbF/AbCC#F – 2
CEBb/CEbAb – 3
C#FAb/CEbFAb – 4
NOW, LET’S DO A 2 TO THE 5 PROGRESSION….MY WAY!
BbF/AbCC#F – 2
CG/BbDEbG – 3
C#FAb/CEbFAb – 4
DAb/CDFAb – ( 5 )
EbGBb/C#FBb – 5
NOW LET’S TURN AROUND WITH THE WHAT IS KNOWN AS THE 3 TO 6 PROGRESSION!!!!
START WITH THESE INDIVIDUAL NOTES…..DO WITH BOTH HANDS….
LH/RH
Eb, D, C#, …….
CG/BbCEG – 6
CAb/CDFAb – ( 5 )
EBb/C#EGBb – ( 6 )
FAbC/EbGBb – 6
NOW WE WILL HEAD TO THE HOUSE WITH A WHAT IS KNOWN AS; A 3- 6 – 2 PROGRESSION….. WHICH IS A BRIDGE TYPE OF PROGRESSION…….
CBb/EAbBbEb…..C# ( SLIDE LAST FINGER TO LEFT TO C# )- 3
FEb/AC#EbAb….F# SAME AS OTHER! -- 6
BbC#F/AbCEb…..F ( SLIDE LAST FINGER RT, FOR F ) -- 2
AND NOW WE WANT TO GO HOME WITH A COMMON 2-5-1 PROGRESSION…
BbAb (IN THIS ORDER )/ C#FAbC – 2
EbGBb/C#FGC -- 5
AbG/CEbGBb – 1
NOW YOU HAVE TO GET USE TO THE SOUND; BUT IF YOU KEEP DOING IT, YOU’LL GET USED TO IT!!!!!!!!!! DON’T QUIT ON YOURSELF!!!
