How can God be jealous of his own writings.  That's like I write a best selling book and then get mad at all the publicity it gets, it doesn't make sense.

Further, you wouldn't even know there was a Christ and a Holy Spirit to rely on, had God not put it in written form and preserved it for you to read these many years later. I know I said that before, but you don't seem to buy that.

Also, you act as though we don't live by the leading of the Spirit and don't acknowledge him to lead and guide us.  This assumption is totally false.  However, I think the majority of us believe that in order to discern THE SPIRIT and YOUR SPIRIT, you need something outside of yourself to gauge what is God and what is you.  Our flesh is tricky, and the devil is subtle, and if you totally rely on what is in you -- well put it this way, the spirit dwells in you, but you also dwell in you, and in you (or me) is no good thing.  Therefore, your (and my) perception is subjective, the Bible provides a reference point so when you or I get off track and feel that we're being led by the spirit, we can see in the bible the things that God himself spoke, and the things that he inspired men to write that tell us certain things are not of God, therefore if we feel an unction to do such things, we will not be deceived.

It was said before that everything is not addressed in the bible, and I agree, I also agree that the Holy Spirit will speak to us and lead us in all of our decisions.  I disagree that the Holy Spirit will tell us to do something contrary to what we are instructed in the Word of God (the Bible) because we know that God is not the author of confusion.

So you don't beleive the bible has divine attributes, such as infallibility?

Now you got it.   ;D

God is a spirit...Yet He put on flesh.  Do we worship the FLESH?  No.

God is a spirit...Yet He manifests Himself as the Written Word of God.  Do we worship the pages?  No.

They that worship him must worship Him in Spirit and in truth.

You seem to have God in a box and say He CAN'T be the written Word!

God is bigger than that!

God was the Ark that brought Noah to safety!

God was the manna that fell from heaven, our daily bread!

He was the fourth man in the furnace with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego.

He was the man who wrestled with Jacob till daybreak.

He was the rock that Moses smote to produce water, just as Jesus was smote to produce the modern day church.

...Cleary He can manifest Himself as the Written Word of God.   ;)

Blind Blind Blind and more Blind. Didn't Jesus not tell the pharasees that they worshipped  more what was written and ritual than God? This is all Hammer is trying to say in a nutshell... What he is saying is that The Book itself has replaced what Jesus really came to do!!! It's one thing to quote scripture for reference but it is another when rituals, what's written and our poor interpretations trump the true essence of a horizontal relationship with God...

I disagree that this is the case.  However, the bible is not just another book, it is the Holy Written Word of God, and should be reverenced as such.  When I read the words that God spoke, written all those years ago, and they apply to my situation today as though they were written expressly for me, that lets me know that God had a hand in what was written and had us in mind even way back then.

Have you ever been praying and God speaks a scripture to you that brings peace?  I was praying the other day and I was in distress over some things, and I heard in my spirit, "God is our refuge and strength a very present help in trouble."  The Word was speaking his Word (pardon me for quoting Madea) to me and I can't even describe to you what it did for me that day.  I've read that scripture fifty-eleven hundred times, but it was just what I needed at that precise time.

Why do we have to separate one from the other?  When I take a college class, there is a teacher and a text book, the teacher teaches me from the textbook, but I have to study the book on my own time to understand what the teacher is trying to convey.  The teacher sometimes will take me further with knowledge that is not covered in the book, but if I haven't studied the text, I will be lost.  The Holy Ghost is the teacher, the Bible is the textbook.

Only in your eyes.  Nobody is this thread is whorshipping a book, but if you wanna keep seeing things with your eyes blinded, blurred, and cross, then go right ahead.  Keep leaning to your own understanding.

One of my teachers use to always say: "'I see', said the blind man to the deaf dog..."  How appropriate.

Then also know that God is a jealous God. He will not share us with other god's; but yet, we take the bible, and call it the Word of God.
Hammer,
The only way we know that "God is a jealous God" is because the Bible says so.

Quote
If Jesus is the Word of God and the bible is the Word of God then we're saying that Jesus is equal to the bible We are saying the bible is Jesus..

Jesus is the Word...the person. The Bible is the written word. Two different things.

Quote
We know that God is infallible and perfect, but then we take the bible, and give it those same attributes, saying it's infallible. When we give it the attributes of the only one who is infallible, God, then we're saying the bible is God.
God's word is infallible because of who it came from. If I tell you to let me borrow $10,000, and that if you will just send it to me on nothing but a  handshake and that you have MY WORD that I'll pay it back. My word ain't worth shucks bro. because you don't know me. For all you know, MY word is not infallible because I'm just a sinfil man who have no reasont o trust. GOD's word is not like that. God sent word, in a document, inspired by him, and written down by MEN who were moved by the Holy Ghost. God's word, the Holy Bible, is infallible because of WHO sent it. My word ain' worth much...but when GOD says soemthing, it's gold,,,you can take it to the bank. God is able to preserve His word accurately. If He didn't do that, He did a mighty poor Job and we have NO reason to trust Him.

Quote
Because of this we are denigrating God and saying He is equal to a book. He is beyond the book. The bible contains some words from God but is not infallible in that it also contains some words from man.
If you have doubt about ANY of the Bible being God's message to us, then how could we trust any of it? I think it's denigrating God to say that He isn't able to give us a sound message without flaws.

Quote
We need to stop relying solely on this book as the ultimate authority and start relying on Christ and the Holy Spirit as our ultimate and intimate authority.

I rely on the Mighty Creator, who made me and everything else that exists, and He loved me, and gave Himself to die for me, and He came into my heart and I know He;s there and He fills me with His presence, and I met Him throught the preaching of his Holy, Pure, message which He, tyhrouggh His almighty power and wondefulness, was ABLE to preserve. ANd when I heard His word, trusted HIm, that faith made me whole and I have never been the same.

If YOU tell me something, it may be true, it may be not.
But when GOD sends word, you can take that to the bank.
