First Day Substitute Teacher.
« on: March 15, 2007, 05:51:51 PM »
Today was my first day sub teaching. I had to get together some supplies this week. I took a job as a clerical secretary thinking I could start out slow into the school system. I ended up in a classroom later on anyway.  :D The teacher left a lesson plan that most students had already completed. Or so they said. ;) Basically I had no back up material. I will know next time. The kids were a little bad but not to bad.  Later after this I went into a crowd class to help out another teacher. That was a little better. The things they taught you in the sub training actually worked. On problem the Sub training was not long enough.

Hopefully I will get better in the future. The school wants me to come back and work all next week. lol Any teachers out there help a brother out. Im assigned grades K-12. Give me some feed back on how to make a productive class.

Much respect to all the teacher now. I see alot of these schools really need help. Very patient people. Those kids will try you. I was just at the middle school I can image what highschool is like.  :D Too bad I cant be a cop and a teacher.  ;D One idea I thought of today was if the teacher leaves a bad lesson plan. I will get the kids in a group and let them come up with questions for each other on what ever subject. Then I can let them compete or a prize as a group or as individuals. That way they can learn the subject at the same time. I figured that can go on any level.

Yea, that might work as long as the kids are interested enough (either in the subject or the prize  :D )

You have to find what will motivate them (either externally or internally). In my area, the best external motivator is food. Not that I teach in an impoverished area, but a lot of these kids just don't get to eat, so food works well.

As for the kids making up questions, that can go either way. That wouldn't work where I am, but it may work for you.

One thing I can suggest is to relate to the kids. They say that kids "don't care how much you know until they know how much you care". Where I am, (Upper Maryland near PA.), this is VERY true. Our kids are very relational meaning, if they're feeling, they'll work for you; if not........ :-\

You'll be fine. If you have any other questions or just want to share war stories, PM me.  ;)  And, welcome to the club.  :D
