« on: March 15, 2007, 07:10:12 AM »
I need your help fam... I am trying to choose what Z6 to get either the Amber or Sunburst. If I get the Sunburst one it will be my 3rd Sunburst bass, but the Amber will be something fresh and new. Which one do yall think looks better?

I live in Baton Rouge,LA so Im going buy the 5 string Amber MTD K5 today. I prefer the more natural look as opposed to the gloosy sunburst. BUt that's just my personal feelings. Both are beautiful axes. But if you want that sunburst you can save $100 by looking at this link:

http://www.theperfectbass.com/explore.cfm?STORE=Y&N=100&SN=100&CT=101&PG=101&W=STORE&P=N&S=1001081&U=1&SS=1&CR=N&modify=0

Scroll down about 1/3 of the page and you will see a MTD KZ6 for $1099

Let me know what you guys think about those basses.  I played a used 5 string about 2 months ago at GC and it didn't impress me at all.  I think it was the strings.  I couldn't any good sound from it so, it kind of put a sour note in my memory about these basses.

Personally, I'm a fan of classic colors so I'd go for the sunburst but those pickup covers don't seem right with sunburst I'd probably choose the amber. Secondly, is the top photoflame or real. I don't like fake tops either so I'd be pretty torn about my decision! Just wondering, are those available with maple fretboards?

Thanks for bringing that to my attn. DWBass Im gonna call them and ask if that is a faux top. Also they do make it with a maple neck I perfer rosewood since it is a little bit more softer sounding.

As for that Scratch and Dent Carl, I would prolly be interested in that if where a rosewood fretboard :-\ oh well.

I'd personally go with the amber.

But as for me, I'm waiting for this bad boy to come out.

KSD (Ken Smith design) 6 String.  It's hitting the streets for $1200

www.brooklyngear.com  is who distributes it.

I saw that. I'm sort of confused because previously Ken Smith always claimed (and has had several arguments regarding) he had very little involvement in the KSD brand other than him 'loaning' out his name. Now KSD comes out with a model that clearly has a Ken Smith Burner headstock! Now as for the bass, that headstock looks weird on a Jazz style body!

I just bought the MTD Kington Z5 from The Perfect Bass (the perfectbass.com) and I happened to like it alot. The neck pretty much sold me b/c of how fast and sleek it was. Im a Fender guy so I loved the change between the 34" scale on the 5 string jazz to the 35" scale on the MTD. If I were in the market for this bass, I would find it and play it before I buy it, b/c I think with this bass you either love it or dont care too much for it. Good Luck

Yeah, I checked out that KSD and Im not a big fan of it. I love Ken Smith basses but Im not a fan of the p-/j-bass bodies and pick guards. I llike the more custom solid look. But to each his own, I think Im gonna go with the Amber Satin only because I am tired of Sunburst basses (I been playiin them for the last 6 years) and I wanna go with a natural finish this time ( I hate cleaning off fingerprints every 5 seconds). I prolly am gonna throw some Barts on it too, but I think Im gonna wait and see how it goes first with the stock pickups before I change over. And on that note do yall think that I could get away with just changing the pickups and keeping the stock pre amp?

Thst's so funny.  I just did the opposite thing for the same rationale.  I really love exotic wood grain finishes and have some really sweet looking tops on some of my basses (coco-bolo on one, highly figured walnut on one, and amboyna burl on another).  So when I ordered my Roscoe, instead of going for one of the highly figured, burled, or spalted tops that Roscoe does REALLY well, I went for a tobacco burst.  A lot more "plain" than my other tops, but still a beauty.

Peace,

James

Can you actually hear these basses before you buy them?  I bought my Lakland used from a guy who had two and didn't like the one I bought from him because it was too warm and he liked a brighter sound.  WHen you get into these custom woods the tone can vary greatly from one to another.  Ask them to send you some mp3s of the basses being played under identical conditions (preferably flat, with the amp also set flat).
