Gospel Rap.......
« on: March 15, 2007, 06:28:49 PM »
I am a gospel rap artist and I have recently gotten a little slack from a Pastor friend of mine who things gospel rap is an evil thing. I am convinced that it is not, but I just wanted what you guys think.

Also, the website for my management company is www.streetanthement.com There is a mp3 player at the bottom of the screen. I go by the name purpose as a rapper and songs 6 - 10 are all songs from my gospel rap album. Listen and tell me what you think.

Now I go to a "Holiness or Hell" Church and our Pastor preaches with FIRE. (I'm COGIC)

And this is what he said," There's not really anything wrong with gospel Rap, as long as it's sending the right message out. Some of those gospel singers you hear now aint' all that saved and walkin' right. They juz put on a show. And these young kids are not gonna want to listen to no old drawn out long slow depressing gospel music. It might suit you fine, but if there's somthing that's bumpin' and it's for jesus, then I say it's alright with me." This is what my pastor says. and He an old school "follow the old path" Pastor.

That's a big point there... is the message getting out CLEARLY?  Or does it look and sound like everything else to the point that nobody can tell the difference?  I've seen some of these "crunk gospel" videos on youtube and it looks and sounds like a hot mess.  Also, there's this:

Romans 12:1-2
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

By making gospel sound more like secular music (not just rap), are we conforming to the behaviors of the world?  A lot of folks nowadays are trying to bring in a lot of stuff, slap "Jesus" on it and say it's their way of praising God.  But will He really accept it?  Or will He see it as a sort of "strange fire" (Leviticus 10:1-2) and reject it?

Just a few thoughts.

Gospel music has changed over thelast 100 years. People 100 years ago would have a fit if they heard all the new choir music that is out. I think some people just have a phobia when it comes to change.

I am starting on my first gospel rap song. I just feel like I can reach those who the choir cant reach. Or those who "fred hammond and them" cant reach. We have to realize that 1. Rap is a form of music: just like jazz, country, rock and alternative etc. and 2. people like different types of music. If you go to one of these catholic churches, their young folks aint listening to the winans and tye tribbett, they listening to some of these gospel rock and alternative artists. So, are they wrong??

All that traditional man made law has to stop. All these artists today sound more and more R and B like. BUt nobody says nothing. But soon as somebody try to rap, they got a whole lot to say. It's Just a contradiction.

Im a post my song when I get done with it. Trust me, it will be like nothin yall heard before......

Cool.  I'm not saying I'm against gospel rap, just saying that with ANY type of gospel music the message should be clear.

I think you are doing a good thing by teaching and reaching the younger generation about Jesus. through rap. This is the 21st century, and the way that older people were taught about Jesus may not work for young people today. Look at Ty Tribbett, Kirk Franklin, etc. They are singing about Jesus, with positive results. If your gospel rap is turning young lives to Jesus, keep rapping, my brother!

i don't disagree, but like some young cats in my church that i helped,i told them:
 1. make sure the message is clear.
 2. don't try to sound like your a street rapper.
 3. make sure you speak clearly.
 4. say your verses slow, almost like your doing a poem in spoken word.

they did it,and even our Paster was very pleased when they did there rapp,as a part of our Black History Play, for Black History Month.
Let your voice, be one voice, to Glorify the Lord.
