I've just started learning myself (about 3 weeks ago).  I am learning by just learning a few simple open voicings like G, C, and D, and some strumming patterns to get going playing some songs.

what must i do to learn to play guitar?

Pretty much devote a good portion of your life to it.  ;D

Seriously, you need to first have a guitar then you have to be willing to spend time learning about the technique of how to play it and some of the theory of what to play on it.
Having a musical ear or intuition is a big help as it can help you turn what you're hearing someone else do into something that you can do, too.
Music theory is not always music reality.

EVERYTHING THEY SAID AND BE VERY DEVOTED BECAUSE THERE WILL BE TIMES THE GUITAR WILL FRUSTRATE YOU BECAUSE OF HOW GOOD IT SOUNDS ON TV OR THE RADIO. BE STRONG AND KEEP AT IT. I HAVE ONLY BEEN PLAYING FOR ABOUT 3 OR 4 YEARS AND PEOPLE ARE TRYING TO GET ME TO PLAY AT CHURCH AND I STILL FEEL I'M NOT READY YET BUT THE BEST WAY TO LEARN IS FROM OTHER PEOPLE. :)

First learn your basic Open Chords.  Practice switching chords (very slow) from like E to G to C to D and so forth... Part two, learn your major and minor scale pattern.  There's lots of useful information on the internet to learn the scales... Also begin slow and work on accuracy...

Next: your best friend will be a metrodome, it's a must in order to develop accuracy and speed, but the key is, is to start slow until you can play either that scale, strumming, or chord changes with almost your eyes close.

Once you feel you have mastered a certain excercise, increase the metrodome by 5 bpm's and so forth...

Final: ask ask ask as many questions, usually everyone has a different approach to excercises for guitar and all are useful.  (for reference by a chord and scale book)
