Chicago COGIC
« on: April 07, 2007, 06:02:46 PM »
I'm going to be in Chicago for a week this summer, and was wondering...what's the COGIC equivalent in Chicago of Los Angeles' West Angeles COGIC?  In other words, what is the main/largest COGIC in Chicago?

That's a hard one.  It sounds you are looking for a large sized COGIC church in Chicago.  Honestly, most COGIC churches in the Chi are small.  I know of a fairly large one in Griffith, Indiana.  It is about 30 minutes from the South Side of Chicago.  It is called Reeds Temple COGIC.  I don't even know if St Paul COGIC, Bishop Ford's church, is still COCIC....since his son took over.  St James COGIC is a well known COGIC church in Chicago, Elder James Campbell is pastor, but there was a lot of drama there a few years back and I don't know if the congregation stuck by him.  But at one time the church was big and it stayed packed.  He has since moved to a smaller church.

If you want mega, go for Salem Baptist Church-it seats about 10,000.  It is Vicki Winans home church when she goes to Chicago.  You also have Christ Universal Temple-it seats about 7,000.  It is non denominational.  You  have Apostolic Church of Prayer and Apostolic Church of God.  I think they are, or use to be apart of PAW.  I know the above mentioned churches aren't COGIc but they are very big.

Try Moument Of faith Evangelistic church. It's Very Large

It use to be COGIC and VERY MUCH still has the same flavor. Bishop Richard Henton is the Pastor and can PREACH!!!!

also, Try Elder Willie Campbell's church ... I think it's Holy Temple COGIC or maybe St James? i cannot remember  It's one of the larger ones in chicago. they have a Great church choir and campbell is one of COGIC"s Best .

also, the others that I know that are a little Larger are Corinthian Temple in chicago and Bethel Temple in Gary.

Apostolic church of God is one of the Largest in chicago(25,000 members) but not real musically oriented if you are looking for that. New salem is Huge too but doesn't have too good of a choir IMO.

Though not COGIC ,First church of Deliverance is Large and has a good choir. Apostolic Pentecostal church of Morgan Park is another church to try. Their pastor got into some Legal trouble. I don't know if things are the same there but at one time they had a Great church choir and the pastor was a very good preacher. I would say there is about 1,000 members there ?

LOL I put Elder James Campbell and I think his name is Elder Willie James Campbell- Pastor of Saint James COGIC.  They do have a great choir.  I was talking to my friend a little while ago and he said the church is doing great compared to what was going on there a few years ago.   I forgot all about Pastor Henton's church.  That's true that Salem's choir is not that good, but the church is spirit filled and you don't see men walking around acting like girls. Apostolic is very uppity, but Bishop Brasier(sp?) can preach so good.  He is one of the best I've ever heard.  First church is cool, the choir is good, I have their new CD.  If you are not used to seeing lots of feminine men, then you don't want to go to First Church....because you will be a little uncomfortable, I know I was.  It was hard for me to concentrate on the service due to some of the men wearing lip gloss and wigs that were made for women.  I had never seen anything like that before at church.  The pastor was good though.

You might want to visit Cosmopolitan Church Of Prayer, Father Charles G Hayes is the pastor.  They have a good choir and Father Hayes is a very entertaining pastor.  Also Fellowship Baptist Church- where Charles Jenkins is pastor and Rev Clay Evans is still preaching and running things, lol.  They have an excellent choir and an over all great service.  Last but not least, Sweet Holy Spirit Full Gospel Baptist Church (Bishop Larry Trotter is pastor) is also a church you might want to visit.

Baptistchurchman, I'm not familiar with any of those churches you named.  Next time I'm in the Chicago I might check one of them out.  There are so many large Baptist churches in Chicago.

I forgot about Sweet holy spirit! their Church Choir is about the best in Chicago( i think).
BTW, how is Angie ray's church since she past? she had a church and her 6 daughters all could really sing. Do you know who I'm talking about?

as far as cosmopolitan, that place is an experience!!! they are quite eccentric to say the least- I believe they are "spiritulaist " which believes they can commune with the dead by lighting candles and other things that are rather strange IMO. I've never been there but have friends who have and said it can get weird.  it's worth going to visit and observe LOL and listening the choir and diane sing " Jesus can work it out".

Questions:you said St James was doing better than they was a few years ago? is that related to the Pastor's divorice ? or other ?
were you saying First church of deliverance was full of sisies? if so, WOW, i remember when i was a kid they was so holy holy!!! what an irony to be a church of deliverance Yet aint no one gettin' delivered ! you know what I mean ????

Bishop Horace Smith's church is another church you may want to visit not really for the choir LOL but it's still a Great church!

Choices, choices, choices! :)  Thanks, everybody, for offering all your suggestions.  Like I said, I'll be there one Sunday and wanted to find a church to visit.  I go to a small Pentecostal church where I live, but I really don't want to visit a small church while in Chicago.  When you go to a small church, you think every person that walks in is going to be a new member.  And when I go to Chicago, I just want to find a place where I can worship God and experience something new.

Above all, please pray that God will lead you to where you need to be for that appointed time, because everything that looks good to you is not always good for you.   8)

First Church of Deliverance has lots of feminine men.  Now I don't know if they are gay, but the are very feminine.

As far as the unfortunate events at Saint James COGIC church,  I heard from an ex-member that Elder Campbell was having an affair with his secretary and his wife and some members walked in on Elder Campbell and the secretary in the act...at the church.  Once it got around the church, members started leaving the church and his congregation went down to a few dozen.  Eventually he was able to bounce back, and I think he married the secretary.  I saw his daughter Bridgett Campbell on Myspace, and she kind of wrote a blog about some of her sadness and pain caused by what happened.  She is very close to her mom, and she is close with her dad again after forgiving him.

that is heart breaking. Don't these Preachers Ever count up the cost ???? the People they hurt?
I had heard that it was adultery just didn't know the details.
There is a Bishop out here in the west coast that recently got a 16 yr old girl Pregnant. It has been made public so it's not gossip. anyhow, I was SHOCKED! He is VERY well known and in a VERY Prominant postion and Denomination. I can't believe that a so called holiness church denomination would just do nothing. our founders are rolling in their graves
