Lakland Basses
« on: April 13, 2007, 07:18:00 PM »
I was just wondering if any of my fellow LMGers knew or had any experience with Lakland bass guitars. I'm in the market for one(another bass that is) and just need a little input. Thanks in advance.
I must fight with my praise.

I played one at a local GC.  I love my Ibanez BTB, but I would take Lakland over it.  It was just RIGHT...lol, no other way to explain it.

I owned a Skyline 55-01 briefly. First off, a well made bass! Nice and light. Now for my dislikes...............

19mm string spacing (too wide for me)
35: scale (I'm a 34" scale guy)
Pre-amp (way too harsh and zero character, IMO)
Mandolin size frets (I'm a medium jumbo, jumbo kinda guy)
Passive/Active switch (Not a true passive/active, if the battery dies, you're dead in the water)

Having said that, I'd still like to test out a DJ model and a 55-94 model!

I played the 55-02 deluxe and it blew me away.  I didn't like the 21 fret setup, but hey i guess you have trade offs.

Get one.  My next bass more than likely will be the 55-02 Deluxe.  I've played one and almost walked out of the music store with it.

It seems like alot of gospel players are playing them, so they will give you that tone that you need for a wide variety of songs.  I played one once not sure of the model and liked the way it felt and sounded, but I am a shallow guy if I don't like how a bass looks no matter how it sound and feels I wont get it I got to be in love with the bass for me to want to pick it and play and practice.  Probably a stupid statement to some but thats just me.

Not really Groove, cause Im kinda the same way.  For example, ppl say MM bongos are hot, but I just cant get past the ugliness.  Anyway, I own a 55-01 right now.  I got it a few months ago from MF's blemished line for a great deal.  It was actually going to be my back up and main while my Stingray 5 was getting made.  I liked it so much, I said forget about the stingray and have been playing it since (just wish it was a diff. color.  Im finicky about natural).  In contrast to DW, Im a wide spacing, 35 scale guy lol.  I'd like to check out a 55-02 or 55-94 though.  Unfortunately Ill have to wait because German stores dont carry Laklands.  :-\

The 55-01 is active but has a an active/passive switch built into one of the knobs. Not true passive though. You still need a battery.

I had a Lakland 55-02 Deluxe fretless for a little while.  I paid $800 for it and was totally overwhelmed at how nice it was.  I didn't have it long enough to experience the passive / active problem that DWBass indicated.  I did have it long enough to realize that (for me) the adjustment to the 35" scale was not that big a deal.

I did wind up selling it, but that was because another fretless bass I wanted more became unexpectedly available.  I didn't need two fretless basses, so I sold the 55-02 to fund the purchase.

The B string on the 55-02 was simply amazing.  It was definitely on par with the B strings on other basses I own that cost significantly more than the 55-02.  The tone and range was also impressive.  One thing you need to know is that the difference between the 55-01 and the 55-02 is that the 55-02 has the same electronics as the USA made 55-94.  That's huge!  The 55-02 is then basically a lower cost, Korean made version of the 55-94.

Peace,

James

The 5501 and 5502 are some of the best out there in their price range. I own a 5501 but have tried all models at the Lakland factory. They do have wide necks and wide string spacing. Perfect for those of us with big hands. Workmanship is excellent. And yes, a lot of Gospel players use them. I'll soon trade for a 5502. You can't really hear a difference from the 5502 and 5594. Its in the materials- 5594s have thicker figured tops (5501 & 5502 deluxe use veneers), they are much lighter and have authentic Hipshot hardware (Skylines are licensed).

I have a 55-02 and a JO5 w/Barts and J-Retro.  I got both of them used and the previous owner did the mods on the JO5.  I haven't played a 55-01 but I've heard one running direct.  I'd take one in a second.  I think all three have similar necks, but the 01 and 02 have deeper set necks so the stretch to first position is a little less than the JO5.

The 55-02 does have the same electronics as the 55-94 and is very versatile.  I can get a pretty good P-bass, J-bass and okay MM tone; but I don't try to go just for that b/c I think it has a great tone all it's own.

I love Lakland basses and agree that the B is killer and the attention to detail is excellent.
