has anyone ever played either the brownsville ub550 or ub500 if so what is your opinion?

I've not played either but my son has just expressed interest in playing guitar or bass and I'm looking at getting something cheap (at first) for him to learn on. This is one of the brands I'm looking at.

I still dont feel bad about my Douglas though.

You can tell it was made cheap by the neck but it is pretty.

The only show room Rondo had was in Union New Jersey. But they have since closed the show room and only do sale strictly online.

But, I can say with great confidence that are are excellent starter basses.

+1 on Rondo Music. I got a 5-string Jazz in 3-tone Sunburst for $150 shipped to my door. Be sure to have it set up but you would do that on any bass that didn't come from a custom shop.

How is the B on it? Is it Fender-floppy, or is it decent?

No the only Manufacturer authorized seller in the US is Rondo. You may get lucky and catch a used one at Sam Ash.

Fender is not known for having tight, fundamental B string setups! Basically all Fender did is make the neck wider, widen the bridge and add an extra string to their 4 strings! No engineering or research!

Sam Ash here in Chicago does sell them. I've seen and played them myself. They have a lot of them - brand new, not used. Very ugly headstocks.

I don't like a floppy B. My ibanez is somewhere between bad and good.

Because I am fairly new to bass and my SX is the only 5-string I've played I can't say exactly. My instinct is that it's a little on my floppy side but it stays in tune surprisingly well.
