Willie Mae Ford Smith is one of the greatest gospel legends of the past! I believe if one is to play gospel music, one must educate theirselves on the history of it. It's good to know about people and groups like Edna Gallmon Cooke, the Golden Gate Quartet, Margaret Allison and the Angelic Gospel Singers, The Sallie Martin Singers, The Davis Sisters, Prof. Alex Bradford and their contributions to gospel. I could name more, but I guess you see what I'm trying to say is we've got to learn our history.

You need to get the whole film if you can.....it's called SAY AMEN SOMEBODY....and it has some gospel legends on there like the late THOMAS DORSEY and SALLIE MARTIN, the BARRETT SISTERS, and the O'NEAL TWINS.  This is a video that every music ministry should make their members watch.  It will BLESS YOU.

If you really want a BLESSING.....here's a clip of probably MOTHER WILLE MAE FORD SMITH's last public appearance before she passed.  Even in her feeble state.....that VOICE still had some mighty power behind it and she still had such control.  She is truly missed.

Okay, the song is, "I'm Bound For Canaan Land" written by Mrs. Ford-Smith.  Only problem now is finding the lyrics... somethin 'bout "legalities".

Geez!  ::)

I have that on DVD...Those people (Prof. Dorsey, Mother Willie Mae Smith, Mother Sallie Martin, are the mighty roots of Gospel music. They gave us the foundation.

How can there be LEGALITIES with this?  She didn't write this song.  I found this song in an old BAPTIST HYMNAL.  Now this may be her arrangement, but you can find the words and original score since it is an old hymn.  I'll check out who wrote it and get back to you.

That voice, THAT voice, THAT VOICE! I bet she used to kill back in the day. Even in her old age, God preserved that voice. Great post NJ.

As I said, the original song is a hymn that  I found in the NAtional Baptist Hymnal.  The title of the song is CANAAN and it was written by Aaron Bash Windom who owns the copyright.

It is said that she had a booming voice and had been known to blow out mics back in the day, thats one reason she did little recording back in her prime.
