What are some common strumming patterns for gospel music??

i wouldn't say there are really any...yo just have to flow withthe music. think of the ryhmic part of your playing as an extension of what the drummer is doing. you can mirror some of things he might be doing on the hats, or do some little rythmic ideas to play off what he's doing. it's all groove man, and you can really only figure it out by listening, learning, then applying.

But isn't the strum pattern suppose to be consistant????

i tried this, hopefully i can explain it,

on a 1/4 beat i did: down-down (on the 1 beat); up (on the 2nd beat); then down (on the entire 3rd beat) and then down and up on the 4th beat... and this actually sounds good if you miss some of the notes on the 6 & 5th strings

also i tried down (hold for 2 1/2) then down up  on the last beats.

here's a good excersice that will probably make more sense: count 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and and play the down up pattern like this:

Excersice 1:

1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and

D  U   D  U   D  U   D  U

Excercise 2:

Count:      1 and uh 2 and uh 3 and uh 4 and uh
Pattern:    D  U    D D  U   D  D  U    D  D  U   D

Excercise 3:  (this helps working on stroking up)

1  2  3  and  4  and
U U  U   D    U   D

if you are playing acoustic rythm guitar, then yeah, it should stay pretty consistent. i assumed you were referring to electric.

yeah Boss, if you wanna learn some cool strumming patterns, I would say study some funk.

But if you think you are not ready, go to youtube and type in strumming patterns and see what you can get

nah, it's not 3/4, it's still 4/4 time.....

you don't have to add the "e's" to make it 4/4.......it was 4/4 the way you had it.

K....like I said before, I'm just a beginner and have a....(gulp)....rhythm problem.   So I am just getting use to all of this myself.

WOW, We are making this hard.Forhisglory,tell us what type of gospel music, you would like to play.I was about to ask you, if you were a premium member.(man i am glad i did not ::)Check out Uriah videos.He is playing congrengational type songs.What a mighy God we serve,Victory is mines.To play like that.You need to get into funk guitar,like someone said.If i ask you, how to mute the strings,would you know how?That all funk is about,but it takes some cor-ornation to do it.Check out his videos,if your church is into that type of music,maybe that is where you need to start.I say start there,then on down the road,worship,quartet,lead stuff,and on and on.Now, when you play that type of music,nobody will know what song you are playing,unless someone is singing the song.You know how the guitar sound,when you down-stroke,and up-stroke.So,catching on to the strumming of a song,is not that hard ;)Try some of his easy songs,Amazing Grace,Pas me not,How i love JESUS.

Yeah, I was referring to electric.  Are you saying that on electric, you don't have to be consistant, wouldn't that be like a drummer being out of pocket?

no, it's just that when you are playing electric...you'll rarely just be strumming along to a song. plus more times than not you are expected to add spice to a song, not try and hold down the rythm. even when you are playing more of a rythm thing, like maybe a funk groove, it's still not a steady strumming pattern, but more syncopated accents and stabs than just strumming chords.

don't get me wrong, there are times, especially in guitar driven rock type music that you'll be playing electric and having more definite rythm patterns (i don't use the word strum because it makes me picture someone just strumming along on an acoustic).......but i was thinking in the context of gospel music, which you'll rarely hear anyone strumming rythm on an electric.

This weekend, I sorta abandoned the "folk" strumming and sorta strummed like the drummer was playing (we have me, and "real guitar player" and a drummer).  People said it sounded good but.....I felt out of pocket.
