Ok, folks. Ima lead by example.
I think that every month there should be a discussion thread to talk about the current issue of MD. In the thread we'll talk about things that we liked and didn't like about the issue. This includes the educational pieces and equipment talk.
Ima start y'all off.
This issue of MD is a dedicated to Improving your Coordination. I think that this is a pretty solid issue for all of LGM to have, especially with the number of threads that pop up asking about tips on building coordination/independence. I honestly thought that this issue was pretty weak compared to the last issues, but there are still some things to talk about.
The cover story is Marco Minnemann. I think that it is pretty good. Marco has some pretty nice things to say. His whole concept on coordination is Interdependence over Independence. This means that all of your limbs are dependent on each other. They all have a groove in the wheel of time. No one limb can exist on its own because it is in the end attached to the others. I'm not going to get too deep into that article for those of you who have not read it. This is more of a discussional teaser.
My favorite part of the issue is the "Independence In-Depth" piece. They ask 9 players to give their advice and tips on how they built their coordination. They asked the likes of Thomas Lang, Virgil Donati, Billy Cobham, and Terreon Gully. There are also nice coordination excersizes in the educational piece.
The part that LGM should be talking about, they are not. The patron Saint of the drum room (not trying to poke fun at you man, I really respect your playing) George "Spanky" McCurdy. He talks about his accent from playing in the church, to playing with Tye, to playing with Diddy. It gives a nice look into the man that has bewildered many a gospel drummer and made us drool (at one point or another).
Again, this is a short editorial to give some conversation starters. If you have read the mag, feel free to give your opinion on the issue. if you liked it, say so. If you don't say it. Any and all feedback is welcome!!
