June Issue of MD
« on: May 10, 2007, 11:45:06 PM »
Ok, folks.  Ima lead by example.

I think that every month there should be a discussion thread to talk about the current issue of MD.  In the thread we'll talk about things that we liked and didn't like about the issue.  This includes the educational pieces and equipment talk.

Ima start y'all off.

This issue of MD is a dedicated to Improving your Coordination.  I think that this is a pretty solid issue for all of LGM to have, especially with the number of threads that pop up asking about tips on building coordination/independence.  I honestly thought that this issue was pretty weak compared to the last issues, but there are still some things to talk about.

The cover story is Marco Minnemann.  I think that it is pretty good.  Marco has some pretty nice things to say.  His whole concept on coordination is Interdependence over Independence.  This means that all of your limbs are dependent on each other.  They all have a groove in the wheel of time.  No one limb can exist on its own because it is in the end attached to the others.  I'm not going to get too deep into that article for those of you who have not read it.  This is more of a discussional teaser.

My favorite part of the issue is the "Independence In-Depth" piece.  They ask 9 players to give their advice and tips on how they built their coordination.  They asked the likes of Thomas Lang, Virgil Donati, Billy Cobham, and Terreon Gully.  There are also nice coordination excersizes in the educational piece.

The part that LGM should be talking about, they are not.  The patron Saint of the drum room (not trying to poke fun at you man, I really respect your playing) George "Spanky" McCurdy.  He talks about his accent from playing in the church, to playing with Tye, to playing with Diddy.  It gives a nice look into the man that has bewildered many a gospel drummer and made us drool (at one point or another).

Again, this is a short editorial to give some conversation starters.  If you have read the mag, feel free to give your opinion on the issue.  if you liked it, say so.  If you don't say it.  Any and all feedback is welcome!!

That's a good summary juSe.

I haven't read the June magazine but I'm interested in Marco Minneman's Interpendence over Independence concept.
I have always assumed that the way to learning independence was to teach your limbs to play at different time measures ?/?

Can you explain further?

You know I'm kidding.

I gotta be honest, I picked it up, I just haven't had a chance to read it yet. I got my second issue of Drumhead and haven't read it yet either! Drumhead is going to turn into something nice. Wait and see.

this is very interesting..

Medically we build neuropathways.. and over time we cant get out of be "locked down" by our limbs.. the best way to break this is through .. pain..
what i mean is that diligent practice will pay off.. i have taken steps backwards to go forward.. it is worth it..

as far as the mag.. i will have to write later on this..

Juse, this is def what LGM should be about..
"For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain".

Well Freddy, there really isn't  much more to explain on the interdependence.  Its basically the premise that all of your limbs are dependent on each other.  They can't be apart of a whole and be separate.  I really don't want to get too far into the article because I want to have dialog about it, not just tell people about it.

The Dennis article in Drumhead was nice.  Its always nice to see D-Man.  In Traps it breaks down his hand technique and breaks down his half-time shuffle.  Not to mention that Traps, in the two issues that they have put out, writes extremely well.  Their articles are in-depth and get to the core of each player that they feature, not just the "who are you playing with" and "what's your set up" questions that MD has been known to put out.  The Jeff "Tain" Watts story following the Max Roach was dope.  He's one of my favorite cats.  He should be in the next issue of Drum Gods.  As should Jeff Pocaro and Bernard Purdie.  Good stuff there.

How do you guys feel about the Drum Gods issue?  Were you satisfied overall?  I think that it was ok for the most part.  I think that they could have eailly turned it into an encyclopedia-type hard cover book series and sold it that way.  It would have allowed them to put more people in it and get more in-depth with their look at each player.  I also feel that there were some questionable entries into the mag.  Namely Travis Barker.  He is in no way, shape, or form a bigger influence on the drun world and the art as a whole than Jeff Pocaro or Bernard Purdie or Stewart Copeland.  I'm glad they decided to put out a second edition.

...I can't wait to get into New Breed.  First I must get through Stick Control and Syncopation. ;)

...juSe, is the "Jim Chapin Book" that they're talkin' about the $100 Special Order one or the $20 one?  I know Dennis and Vinnie worked out of the $100 one. :-\

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe its the $20 one.  I didn't know that there was a $100 special order one.  Does it come with a Red Rider decoder pin and a Dominique Wilkins All-Star card.

...are you kidding??  You mean you didn't know??  Dude, the whole drumming world went on a frenzy when news broke.  This book was Lost in the Series "Lost".  They just brought it out.  Dennis and Vinnie speak highly of it.

The June issue and the Drum Gods Collectors Issue are hand-in-hand Must Reads for anyone here looking to grow. I also suggest the latest issue of Traps Magazine as well as DRUMHEAD magazine.

These issues have really pushed me back to basics: Reading, Counting and Listening in Time.

Sidebar:
(You would have to hve Jeff Queens DVD or have researched the Education articles on VicFirth.com to know what I am referencing... hint-hint)
Jeff Queen has his students playing rudiments along to Tommy Igoe's play-a-long tracks in the book, GROOVE ESSENTIALS. His is how to develop musical phrasing to off-set the mechanical sterility that happens often with marching monster pad-a-holics.

The book that Dennis an the old cats reference from Jim Chapin is the $100 edition.

Let's return to studying the craft of music.
Try not to become a person of success but rather a person of VALUE. - T. Harv Eker
