I am in a college choir at our church. We sing a good repitroire of songs, from Negro Spirituals, Contemporary Christian, Traditional Gospel, etc... When we sing songs that have soloists on the original recordings, more often than not we don't have a soloist. Sometimes the songs don't sound quite right, but we do a good job choral wise. And when we do have a soloist picked, it's either the same person over and over again, or else they find someone who doesn't go to our church and brings them in as a "guest soloist". It's just my opinion, but some of the guest soloists aren't that spectacular and some of them are in HIGH SCHOOL and this is a COLLEGE choir, it's not they sound like Yolanda Adams or Donald Malloy. They are more often than not close friends of our director. I personally think it's an insult to the choir not to utilize more of its own members for solos, like the director is saying "ya'll ain't good enough". They don't even ask people to do voice tryouts. They need to find others who can carry a note and use them. I mean, they don't even have to be the VERY best, but I feel you should do what you can with what you've got and not outsource. What's everyone else's perspectives on this?

Have you mentioned this to your director? If not, you should. Perhaps, you could volunteer for a solo.

Despite our communication technology, no invention is as effective as the sound of the human voice.

LOL, I don't know if they want me for a soloist, I sound like James Cleveland with a mouth full of cotton and bronchitis on a good day! If this issue comes up, I'll bring it up with the director, though as of recently, some things have taken place at the church that I find to be not of God such as some un-Godly behavior by ministry leaders. I might be leaving the choir if I find a new church.

OT- The MOM told people even if they were unsaved, they could join this particular choir. I think if you're going to minister to someone through song, you should know what you're ministering about, right?

Depends on what the mission of the choir is.  Some have a mission that is more focused on ministering to those in the choir than to those sitting in the audience.  In my opinion, for a choir to be used as an outreach tool like this, there would need to be much more incorporated into the group meetings than rehearsal, like prayer, bible study, etc.   Is your choir designed to reach college students, or is it a choir made up of college students whose purpose is to minister?

I pray that the Lord leads you regarding the other issue.

I sometimes brought in soloists for my high school gospel choir but that was because the solo material was too hard for my singers. I did develop my singers also to get them to the point where I wouldn't have to bring in soloists anymore... It works good for a BRAND NEW group from TIME to TIME but not on the regular...

According to the director, he says sometimes when we practice "remember, ya'll are ministering to people out there in the congregation", by that statement, it sounds like we're college students whose purpose is to minister.

And thanks for your prayer, it is greatly appreciated.

I completely diagree with having to be saved just to sing for the lord .... i believe that many havent made that final transition to completly turn there life over to christ ... but i do think that this should be a goal for the unsaved person ...

Also, sometimes I experience this at my church. Where my best soloist happens to be my best Soprano, and overall best singer in the choir.  So when I have her lead, the soprano section acts like they forgot the whole song...maybe the case is the same here...but you should mention it to him/her asap

I agree that they can sing in church but not in the choir. The choir is sacred and is a image of your church and your church is a image of God! That choir must be on one accord, God and satan don't get along.  If it's ok for that, then let me see you serve under a unsaved pastor, the same rule apply for the choir and musicians. That's why the church is losing power now too many UNSAVED people are doing too many SAVED people job.
