Apartment-Dwelling Drummers

Ok guys.  For those of you who live in apartments and other areas that you can't make too much noise, how do you practice?  Which practice kit(s) do you use?  How do you keep your neighbors happy?  I'm looking to move into my first apartment and I am deffinitely not going to be without my practice time. 

I am eyeballing the Remo Thomas Lang practice kit and with the cross trainer hi hats and ride.  Do you all have any advice on what to do?

When I used to play set I actually had these pad type things that muffle the sound but allow you to still play it as normal...

I already own some of those, but for space purposes, I need to go a little smaller-scale.

Guy for years I was in your shoes! BUY THE; Remo Thomas Lang practice kit and with the cross trainer hi hats and ride!!! DO NOT BUY, sound offs that go over your drums, its not quiet enough and you will get complaints! Also time of day is very important! If you are married, look to rent a house. Just look around and pray, you will find one at a good price.

Thanks Dahkness.  I thought you was a ghost anymore!  I am definitely single and childless!  The Thomas Lang and Cross Trainers are definitely looking like the best way to go.

Any other advice is accepted.

J,

your missing one main thing... Apts. got garages!! look for an apt with a garage that is far enough away from the apts so that you can play..
This was a big factor in me and the wifeys decision to buy a condo with a garage... i practice when ever i want, never got one complaint..

I didn't know that. How does an apartment have a garage? is it the ground floor apartment or something? Cool ideas.

I bought a Simmons electronic kit from Guitar Center $300, changed the module to a Yamaha DTX for better sounds. When I cannot get to Moms house(15 min. away) where my acoustic kit is(which I prefer), I jam at my apartment I am plugged into a KC Roland amp(which sounds extra rich and goood) I can plud my Vic Firth Iso's into the amp for total quiet or unplug the phones and set the volumes of the module and amp to the desired setting and voila. It is not an acoustic but gets the job done in the mean time in between time................................... ..NO COMPLAINTS SO FAR AND SOMETIMES I KNOW THEY HEAR ME.

it is separate from the apt.. made for your car.. instead you park on the street and make your garage a drum lab ;D

You can go to Target and get bar stool pillows to put on your existing set, cymbals and get a regular pillow (not a soft one) to put between you kick and the head. The elastic from the bar stool pillows will fit around the rim so it will not move, for the floor tom just get standard set pillow. This will mainly be a set to build your muscles, exercises and practice for routines. You can also poke a small hole in the middle of the bar stool pillows to fit them around your cymbals and top hi hat cymbal, rides will be too large. check me out on youtube
