Derek Trucks - Thanks JayP5150
« on: June 04, 2007, 09:45:14 AM »
I had recently read about him, few weeks ago maybe when I was researching the Allman Bros band, but I didn't look for any of his music...

....well I was surfing old posts and came across JayP's old post on slide guitar, and he(you) mentioned Derek Trucks and his song Joyful Noise. so I said let me listen to him....

I am blown away. He plays with such feeling, and spirit. It's like a combination of Santana, Hendrix, and Robert Johnson, along with several Indian and other region styles all in this young cat. His doing more work with a slide than lots can do with all four fingers goin, lol.

I have already been inspired and added some new stuff to my repertoire. Also going to buy a slide during lunch. But more importantly, he has inspired me to make sure every note has a meaning or a feeling. Sometimes, we can get so caught up in the scales, etc., and miss the fact that each note is like a word in a story. Sometimes you can say too much, sometimes you can say too little... so be careful what you say (play) when you're telling your story on the guitar.

Just had to share, no real purpose for the post, and to thank JayP for the recommendation, even though I think the post was from '05? Just goes to show you how what you say on the message board can have far reaching effects on Lord knows what guitar player or future player may be reading.

Thank you all for your opinions and insights.

That's cool, man. I'm a huge fan of both him and Warren Haynes. I wish I could play slide like him, but I guess I got my own thing lol.

I've thought about doing more on here for slide, but no one seemed interested too much, so I didn't continue it.

If I get the time soon, I may do that.

I, too, find myself playing less notes, and trying to pour more of me into each not I play. It's semi-frustrating, since I can listen to something I recorded years ago, and I can hardly play some of those licks anymore (I was a VanHalen nut!), but what I can play now is so much more mature than then.

Try to get a hold of some of his live stuff, it'll floor you (especially when he and Warren are dueling for minutes on end...).

Thanks for the recognition, I'm glad someone's listening lol ;)

im most definitely listenin man! ive already downloaded his "Live at the Georgia Stadium" and "Songlines" album and have been enjoying those. plus ive seen a couple clips of him live with Warren Haynes, who like u said is great also. its just something to watch him stand there almost motionless and get so much E-motion from the guitar...finger picking no less..

just got back from the music store, bought a glass slide that covers exactly two/thirds of my ring finger, down to the second joint. i tried it out in the store and i think ill be the most comfortable with it.

ive downloaded a bunch of slide info, plus copied your post which was very informative.

we'll see what happens....

also, my email address is Tcrivens@hotmail.com if you get around to doing any more slide stuff. thanks again man.  8)

No problem.

There's a decent amount of what I do on slide on my soundclick www.soundclick.com/jaypatton.

Check out "Conversation with God (part 1)" and "Break Free." There's acoustic resonator all through Convo pt 1, and the "lead" is elec. The first lead break in Break Free is elec slide, and the outro solo is a straight/slide onslaught (two guitars at once).

Let me know what you think.

I saw Derek live a couple years ago. I'd never heard him play before that and only heard his name through the press he was getting.

Let me tell you, it was a humbling experience to watch and listen to him playing nothing but an old SG and a probably modded Fender Bassman or Super Twin...the sounds he was getting...his slide technique...the emotion and command he has over his instrument...it was a special concert.

I'm pretty sure he plays everything in open tuning and uses only his fingers to pick.

If you get a chance, check out a tune he does called "Afro Blue". The song is a lesson in dynamics and emotion communicated through music and how tightly sync'd a band can be as they tell a story together.
Music theory is not always music reality.

jayp - as luck would have it, i didnt have the capability to listen at home either (work laptop that has same restrictions)....but the minute i go over my parents house, ima blast u thru the speakers!

gtrdave - i did hear afro blue and you are right in every sense. if you ever wanted a perfect example of "being on the same page" as a band, that was it. i had the original by mongo santamaria on cd, and when i heard derek's...it was like he wrote the song himself.

i also like how he goes straight from his SG to his amp with no effects, and still gets that feeling. if he ever comes within 100 miles of Memphis, i'm there.

I hate to tell you this, but you just missed him.  He was there for Memphis in May on the 5th and 6th I believe.  Warren Haynes was there also.  You're not alone though.  I missed them too.  :(
God Bless!!

Dave's right, everything (even the straight playing) is in open E.

The shocking thing about his rig is his speaker choice--cheap-o Pyle replacements. He had to get them in a pinch on the road once, and loved the tone, and has used them since. Man, I was so proud of my Celestions, too... lol

I appreciate that. Slide's something I love, but don't work on as much lately. It's been really busy here the past few weeks, but as soon as I get time, I'll try to do a vid to the slide tutorial stuff.
