Is this a good way
« on: June 04, 2007, 05:08:04 PM »
Now I have been playing the keyboard for abt 2 and half years. My playing has grown but I haven't been able to just pick up on alot of songs and flow with it. My question is should i focus on one key and just try to learn everything in that key and then move to the next.I here a lot of people say they have a favorite key but personal I don't have one.So when you all started playing did you play in one key.My goal is to learn them all and I can play most of the simple  progressions and preacher chords in about every key but I am not fluent in one. Your advice would really help. Thanks in advance

Honestly, this is a question that only you can answer.  I would suggest that you keep doing what you're doing.  Keep learning in all keys then you won't have a favorite key like some of us.  You'll become fluent in time as long as you keep practicing.
Real musicians play in every key!!!

Yep, like T-Block said.

I was prejudice for a long time, since I LOVED to play in the black keys. The white ones would cause me to stumble a bit, but now I can play in all of them, but not equally.

I also agree.  It will take you a little longer, but the difference is worth the distance.  Additionally, study the relationship between the keys.  A lot of the chords that you use translate to other keys in a different way.  For instance, I use the following chords as a transition in 3 keys:

lh/rh

C,E,G,Bb/Db,Gb,Bb
C,Eb,F,A/Eb,Ab,C
Bb,Eb,F,Ab/Eb,F,Ab,Db

In Ab, it's transition from the VI to the II
In Db, it's transition from the I to the VI and...
In Gb, it's transition from the I to the III

There are countless examples of this.  I hope that helps.
I would rather be one of kind than a cheap copy of a great original.
