« on: June 04, 2007, 11:55:03 PM »
aye wuzzup yall
I just got a new Dell computer which is going to be used for music production and it comes with Vista home premium.  I have a windows Xp cd and i was wondering if it would better to downgrade back to XP then when Vista is more established, upgrade it again,
or should i just wait until all the drivers n stuff come out for Vista.

what do you all think???? ?/?

Man, Im goin through the same thing!!!!!

I been lookin for my recovery CD from another computer so I can revert back to windows Xp from vista.

Vista takes up too much memory. I got a 3.3 Ghz processor with a gig of ram. My computer runs "Okay" but nothin special. Now, if this processor and ram was ran with windows xp, my computer would be a whole lot faster.

Not to mention, I got pro tools 7 and it wont work on windows vista.

I recommend, if you can, revert back to xp until vista gets more established.

SO VISTA DOESN'T SUPPORT OLDER SOFTWARE?

I REMEMBER WHEN XP FIRST CAME OUT I COULD USE ALL OF MY WINDOWS 2000 PROGRAMS ON XP. BUT EVENTUALLY I UPGRADED THE PROGRAMS.

XP EVEN SUPPORTED WINDOWS 2000 DRIVERS FOR HARDWARE.

YA'LL LET ME KNOW WHATS UP B/C LATELY I'VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT SWITCHING OVER TO MAC.

Switch to Mac.

I'm thinking about switching to Linux (it's free), because the desktop is the same as Mac/Vista, and a lot of my applications (even Windows ones) will run on it...with some tweaks of course.

well, everything I got made by Steinberg is compatible. Just not pro tools. But like printer drivers and things where you would have to look for a cd to install, will be installed automatically.

Nothings wrong with Linux, but in my experience, Linux audio is the worst. But as a general use/ household computer, Linux is a viable (and inexpensive) OS alternative.

Mac is good; however, the people at Apple really need to lower the cost of their hardware for me to switch over to Mac entirely. I'm going to get a MacBook very soon, but I'm still keeping my Windows desktops (which run XP). Also, I'm definitely installing XP Pro on that MacBook.

Vista so far has not impressed me. Graphics-wise yes, it has alot of bells and whistles. But I would rather devote system resources to audio plugins and not the graphics like Aero. Windows XP in all its versions performs decently enough for me NOT to switch to Vista. Maybe I'll switch to Vista when Microsoft drops support for XP.

I'm sort of sketchy on going back from Vista to XP. If your computer came with Vista pre-installed, it's going to be a risk going back because the necessary drivers may not be there. This was the case with my laptop. I attempted to downgrade to XP and found that I couldn't connect to the internet, hear sound, nor play videos/audio because the computer did not have XP drivers, it had Vista drivers. And when I called tech-support, they could not assist me because I was working under XP instead of the Vista OS that it came with.

End result: I had to pay 30 bones for a Vista recovery CD.

Yeh i think I'll just stay with Vista cuz FLStudio7, Cubase SE, and Adobe Audition 1.5 works on it and thats all I really need at the moment.

hello im back

i orginally responded earlier and stated to go back to XP until Vista gets the drivers squared away

i have a Vista and i use the Presonus FirePod and it works great with Vista, Its also firewire which some say is faster than USB. since i have had it i havent had any problems i had for about 4 months

attached is a picture of what it looks like

it has great features and i can record up to 8 tracks at a time and split them off into separate tracks in Cubase. My laptop came with Vista and noone at the music store new about the firepod being compatible i called Presonus and they told me that it was compatible. i took a chance and bought it and now i dont have to downgrade to XP

What ever you do, do not down grade because as soon as you down grade all the new supplies will come out for Vista. And I personally like Vista, it looks more lavish and better to use.

Downgrading or leaving it the same really depends upon what you're using.  I have Audition so I'm fine with Vista.  However, if you are using Pro Tools, which unfortunately is the industry standard, you HAVE to downgrade because Pro Tools say themselves that they are not compatible with Vista.
