To share or not to share...that is the question
« on: June 12, 2007, 02:29:11 PM »
Waz good fam!!! I'm here trying to figure out how all of you guys feel about sharing your gear. Now usually I'm a generous dude, but I'm starting to feel like I'm getting pushed to my limit.

Now I don't mind putting my favorite and only snare out for a concert or even my cymbals, I'm just saying if your going to break my head or crack my cymbals at least tell me so I can try to replace it.

Now I've had experiences where I've gone to churches when I was younger and people would take their snares and good cymbals off when I came up to play not because I played too hard or because I was sorry but because I was just young, and I felt like crap and I'm the kind of guy that simply wouldnt want anyone else to feel like that. Therefor I've never really minded sharing my gear...that is up until now...

The thing that's starting to tick me off is that I dont have a job, and usually when I get a lil piece of change I try to get some sticks. It seems like when cats see me with a full bag, they expect me to just give up a few pairs...what's up with that?!?!?! Like I said usually I wouldnt mind but when a whole bunch of people are asking then you seem like a a jerk when you say no to a few and not all, not to mention these arent so much little kids, these are grown men and cats my age, ya dig?

So what do ya'll do when this kinda stuff happens, because like I said I dont want to be a jerk but...well you know

Tell them get their own stuff.  Don't be rude about it, but let them know in no uncertain terms that those sticks need to last you for a while.  What I do when people start wanting to use my stuff...I joke and say,  ok, but that'll be $50.  Even though they know I am playin...they leave me alone.  If someone is in need, a kid most likely, I'll give up some sticks.  I have even given away a cheap metronome and old cymbals I had to help the kids out, but if you talkin adults or near adults thats another story.  I know guys that are late teens/adults that may be in need temporarily, and are the type thats appreciative and would help me if I needed help, so for them, i would try.  There are others that just mooch and are all about themselves.  They will just need to go to the store and buy their own.

And before you lend it tell them that if they brake it they gotta pay for it. and as for the rest id do what shall176 said make a joke out of it but give them the hint... and who cares if it looks like your a bad person thats your stuff God has blessed you with...

man i think ima carry some b8's around with me when i have to do a gig and im apart of the house band. i did a gig this past weekend and i had put my BRAND NEW Legacy crash on the set. i had just got it the day before  . . . . . . this dude went up after me and slayed my cymbal for a good 15-20 minutes. . . . .  just wearing it out. after the first song i told him that the stuff wasnt rental and that it is mine....still was slaying it.

it was a church type function but boy it was about to be some unholyness  . . . .

thats just how if feel about it now im not down for puttin my stuff on the line to get messed up so they either play b8's or play with  brushes. . . .

I heard that....We fellowshipped with a church a while back, and were told we were doin the entire service.  I usually play percussion but had to play the kit that night.  So I brought my cymbals out cuz they had old cracked stuff.  Turned out another couple of groups came.  This dude was riding out on my 16" K custome dark crash and whippin my splashes like he was playing metal or something.  I just knew they were gonna crack.  i am not taking my cymbals out again after that....

man, usually imma nice person n all, n i wouldnt really care but, i got some new cymbals on the way and when they come in i wont be so generous.  not sayin that imma be mean, but it'll be a suprise to people when i tell them "if you break, you buy it" before they play it.  i know my conscious might bother me when i do, but that's brand new equipment and breakin' cymbals just because you simply play too hard or dont have good technique is out of order in church.

man Steve, i dont know, i prolly wouldve told him as soon as I saw him hittin too hard to cool it down, if he wouldve kept on i wouldve took them down while he was playin' n put my old cymbals up lol. im bein real.

I'm also quite funny about lending my stuff out, cos  i kno i haven't got a stash of money to replace it. And in lin ewith what you guys are saying, people are happy to use your stuff but if they damage it they seem quite reluctant to want to replace it. lol.

I've got 2 kits (A Pearl Export & a lower end travel kit)...

I let ANYONE play the travel kit, ANYONE. As for the Export... let's just say... "it looks pretty" to those who have seen it. ;D

All my cymbals are too low end for me to care at the moment so I don't really mind what happens to them.

I don't give sticks away (that includes gifted sticks, because they're not cheap here) AND I'll let people play my main snare IF I'm around otherwise they get the crappy steel snare I specifically keep for this very reason.

I don't consider myself to be scrooge... Where I live, it is what it is.

Forget letting people borrow stuff if they are not serious about the drums. I had an experience this past Sunday. I didn't really let the person borrow the drums personally but here it goes. Last week our main keyboard player had practice with another band in our church. I was like whatever. I wasan't even there. When I got to church on Sunday morning for our English service (We have three services. My and my brother switch up the services) the drums were set up a whole different way. I was so mad. I was like what the heck man. We let you come in to our church let you use our drums and you still change it to your set-up and don't bother to put it back?. I had to play in a nasty set-up because I was running late and I didn't have time to set it up back to my set-up. Man, I found that very disrespectful. I would never do that in someone elses church. I guess some people don't have the freakin common sense. I'm going to have to have a talk with our main Music Director. That is just wack right there. GB.

Hey man...I tried to get his attention and he was just so into his death metal routine. lol  He would not acknowledge me.  In fact when dude came in I spoke and he seemed like he was too good to talk back.  And thats what I am talking about.  some guys are appreciative and will help you out as well, and some are just into themselves.  I will not let those people use my stuff....and many drummers I come in contact with seem to thik they are reazlly great and the next Chambers or Weckl or something.  SO needless to say, I will have an excuse why you can't use my stuff.  But those humble cats....The ones that want to share or learn, and take your advice with an open mind and with a thirst to learn.  Yes I will.

Personally I wouldn't feel bad about not sharing. Drum equipment is VERY EXPENSIVE!!!!

A while back I cracked my friend's XS Splash. I guess I was playing too hard on it. And I saw first hand how easy it is for symbals cracked if you don't hit them the correct way every time.

But as far as sticks are concerned, no matter where you go a drummer should ALWAYS have thier own sticks. There's no excuse for that. I have sticks in my car, closet, under the bed, and even in the bathroom! lol. But there really is no reason for a drummer to go to a church KNOWING they have to play and be without sticks.
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
