Buying a drum set for the band/practice... help me out.
« on: June 14, 2007, 01:04:26 PM »
Hello, I'm mainly a saxophonist and am starting a band. I need a drum set for my house for practice sessions and possibly gigging since I will be buying a better set than the drummer has at the moment. Anyways, I can keep a beat on the drums, but definitely want to expand my skill level and will be able to with my access to my own drums. The style of music is going to be jazz, r&b, funk, gospel, etc.. I've been looking at the Mapex Pro M birch set or the PDP MX series. My budget is about $1000 for the shells. Do you guys have any other suggestions or kits to consider? Definitely need a nice looking kit as well, I love the Mapex black/green fade and the MX tobacco fade.

...I would say that the PDP MX Fade wins over the M Birch.  If you like Mapex, also check out the Pro M Series.  If you're going to need a road worthy kit, then check out the PDP CX (wrap finish) due to the fact that it's vulnerable (sp?) to nicks and dings here and there.

...others that you might want to check out are:  Pearl's New Export (Maple Shells), ddrum Pocket kit, (Ash Shell), Yamaha Tour Custom (Maple Shells).

...Have fun and welcome to LGM's Drummers Forum.

Hey guys, after some more reading and researching, I think I am going to go with the Sonor 2007 in blue fade. It's different, heard nothing but great things about it, and I see less people with Sonor. What do you think? wise choice or stick to the Mapex and PDP?

Dude, you can get a 5 piece pearl EXL kit at guitar center for $599 for the shells. The EXL isnt a bad sounding kit at all, and they look great. That way you can have a solid kit and cash left over for hardware and cymbals and what not...Good luck on the hunt my friend, and I hope you find what you're looking for

Look in the classifieds and buy a used top of the line kit. You might even get one with cymbals and hardware.
Mapex Drums, Grant Custom Basses, Carparelli Basses, Istanbul Cymbals,!
