How about taking the res head OFF of your bass drum and toms to get that "sound" of the day.  If you all don't know about that I must be really old.  I had the hardest time going back to putting those res heads on the drums.

I still keep a blanket in my kick, use moon gels on my snare, and I have folded up paper towels taped on the inside of my kick drum res head.  It has the perfect sound.
When you've done your very best, do even better.

...dude, my Asst. Pastor still has his heavy duty Titan Boom stand from back in the day with the big weight.  That thing is crazy.  He puts an old A Zildjian 22" Ride from like the late 80's on it and I'm telling you, that stand will not move.  TAMA makes tanks for hardware then and now.

You're not alone - I used to do that to my set as well.  In fact, most of the churched of that day (era) had their sets like that.  It's like me being easily able to identify the period of time a recording was done based on the sound of the drums.  I know that this is off topic, but is anyone else able to do this, too?

Every city has a cat that plays the china way too much.  This one cat in particular has 3 cymbals on his kit...  14" hats, 20" ride, 20" china.  He plays it like its going outta style!!  He actually got it banned for all of the drummers in his jurishdiction!!!

Thats comedy!

'tis true... Now they're going to come with an alternate effect to wear out, like the Crash of Doom, the O Zone, or the Effecks (or any similarly intended plates).

Eh...  I don't think that there is a cymbal that is quite as "distinctive" as a china.  Those cymbals are still crashes in my mind.  I'd much rather hear someone riding a Crash of Doom or ozone than a china.
