As organist and piano player sometimes I get drowned out by the drummer and guitar players, either because the leslie in the wrong spot or folk just play toooo... LOUD!!  As musicians we have to always keep in mind that we are in a band situation and not a "ME" situation.

What ya'll think??? ::) ?/? ;)

GREAT point!  We should play TOGETHER as a band, NOT compete with each other.  I tell the band at my church that all the time.  I think they're starting to get it.

I know exactly what you’re talking about "iplaytheorgan2", there are times when I am playing with particular musicians and they simply want to be the only one's heard. It's tough for me because I don't want to be in competition with them during a service, we should compliment each other thus allowing us to effectively minister to those there.

Nothing worse than that.  I backed up our Praise team at a concert and I COULDN'T HEAR myself.  No matter how much I turned up the keyboard I couldn't hear it.

After the selection I was asking folk how I sounded because I couldn't hear myself.   >:(

yeah i really hate it  >:( >:( >:(

when i play with someone else i don't try to dominate the whole church, what's the point of that?? the singers and the words of the song should be heard above everything else.

the singers and the words of the song should be heard above everything else.

Amen! I think we as musicians sometimes forget that, including myself. We could easily take all the instruments out of the church and just sing a song and God will still move. The music is there just to add a certain "body" to the song but what really makes a song is the words.

Anyway, back on topic. Fortunately we don't have this problem anymore. Everyone can hear themselves just fine. It wasn't always that way. Especially on the piano. The keyboard we have is a Roland FP-9 and if you've even played one of these, you know the internal speakers are located underneath the keyboard. That's fine in a solo environment, but when you have everyone playing and singing, it's easy to get drowned out. I can remember a time several years ago when I would sit down and play the organ and because the keyboard player couldn't hear, he would turn his volume up and then I couldn't hear myself. One time he actually had the nerve to yell at me for playing too loud. Well I couldn't hear myself, so what was I supposed to do? No, a fight did not break out, that's the last thing that should happen in church. I just kept my mouth shut and let it go. I finally got fed up and dug our old keyboard amp out of the closet and put it up there next to the keyboard. We've never had that problem since.

Everyone do your keyboard players a favor, suggest a keyboard amp if they don't already have one.  ;D

Yes that is the answer to the problem proper monitors for everyone.  I don't have a problem at my church any more, because about 7 years ago the church purchased a system so each musician has their own monitor mix, the pastor has his monitor mix and the vocals(praise team and choir) have their monitor mix.  It's just when I go to another church for a service or concert, the sytem is not good or the instruments are not properly mic'd.  So that means the musicians have to be conscious of their volumes and must be sensitive to each other, and usually that doesn't happen. LOL  :) ::)

WOWWW it's funny I came across this post....I really hate that...PERFECT example...my church is in our 24th Annual Founders Week Convention, this whole week. Well anyways a visiting church came out last night(like every night this week)..and when the pastor got up too preach his musician got on to play as well...so he hop'd on the keyboard...so I was like cool...so he played..well yea after the pastor was finished preaching ...you know thats the time when the musician plays softly...cool...well this pastor gave a word from the Lord to my Bishop Elect...and the whole church went in...so buddy asked me to get on organ and play with him...so I said sure...TELL ME WHY he had the organ sound on the keyboard(Yamaha MO8)....and then turned up the volume all the way ...so it drowned me out...so basically it didn't sound good...and I couldn't hear myself...and it sounded like 2 organs playing at the same time..with 2 different styles...a mess....LOLL....but anyways...To GOD be the glory!!!!

WOW!! My heart goest out to you.  You know what that is called "EGO".  Some musicians have these big egos and always feel they have to shine rather than be as one with the other musicians.  AND WHY??? WOULD THE GUY USE THE ORGAN PROGRAM IF YOU'RE ON THE ORGAN???? I don't get. LOLOLOLOL!!  :D ;D ?/? ::)

I know the feeling.  Everytime we attend our sister church for service, the guitar player and the drummer, drown out everything and everybody.  This goes on at every service.  It's a waste of my time to bring any of my equipment because I can't ever hear what I am playing.

I even had to pull my speakers closer to me to hear and still couldn't hear.  The other keyboard player sitting directly next to me, I didn't hear anything that he was playing.

Now, that's a shame.  The guitar player is the lead musician there.

What do you all suggest?

yes! i definitely had that same experience when i play the organ in every service.

A couple of weeks ago when i was playing the organ, i could barely hear myself, but that is because the leslie was in the wrong spot. The Leslie was further from me.

Also, the guys at my church play tremendously loud. The bass guitarist and the pianist was basically showing off; the drummer was fine but sometimes he shows off too. The saxophone is pretty ok.

There were some cases where i couldn't even hear the piano nor the organ; i just hear the loud bass and saxophone and drums.

It is really not good to show off, thinking you are all that great. Just play to the honor and glory of God.
Also, i think each instrument should have a volume monitor to monitor the volume. So if it is too high, it can be decreased.

Another reason is where the amp is facing; if it is facing towards the congregation, the musicians will not know that they are playing so loud, since they can't really hear it that much. So the amp should be facing slightly towards them so they can easily monitor.

The drums are really hard to control the volume because basically the drum is a loud instrument. Sometimes, when you feel the Holy Spirit or when you're feeling the music, it makes you want to play louder and play harder. lol. It is difficult to control the way how you play the drums. I believe the drums should be hook up to the sound system so that the sound men can monitor and adjust the volume of the drum.

Thank goodness that the drums are not hooked up to the sound system because then, they probably would run everyone out of the church.   ;D

The drums are on the other side of the church and still pretty much drowns out everyone.  In other words, each musician, with the exception of the drums, have their own sound system.

I wish that everyone was on one accord.  The guitar player finally get to the point where pretty much everything is drowned out.  I don't know if their speaker system is running 3000 watts or what.  LOL

yep the drum is the loudest, even when it is not hook up in the sound system.

Like the drumset in my church, you can hear the drums from the back (well my church is not even big anyways). But the piano and bass player are hook up to amps. The organ is kind of hook up to the sound system (has a mic next to the leslie). The drums is the only one that is not hook up to anything.

So the resolution to solving this problem is not simply telling them to play softer because they will forget  ;D

The best thing is have them monitored or hook to sound system and lower the volume when they decide to get loud. As least, you can control the volume instead of complaining of loud volume and telling the musicians and they are not complying

Hey Linelle and yes, that's quite annoying. I have somewhat of an advantage because it's my family who's the band but now that we have everything miked and supposed to come through the monitoring system, we have to keep in mind of the volume.  It's annoying when you can't hear yourself through the monitors too and you have an expensive sound system with non- cooperating sound techs....LOL!  Oh and good to see you SugeHeights....I thought you disappeared because I haven't seen you on here ;)
