where does some of this stuff come from????
« on: February 09, 2007, 05:28:07 PM »
I consider myself to be a pretty accomplished musician, but there are a few things that seem to be flying right over the top of my head.  I want to see what some of your opinions are about them.

I play, and I play by ear.  I can also read music, but I hate to cause it takes so much longer to learn the music....anyway, I think that I can learn just about anything that I hear.  Some things of course take longer than others but I still end up learning it.  Where my problem comes in is just making up stuff out of the air.  Where do these guys get some of the stuff they play.

I know tri-tones and  substitutions and passing tones are a big part of everything, but where do they get the inbetween chords that they play.  I see guys that just sit down at the organ or piano and they just play.  I mean they freestyle, but everything sounds so together and phat, but they are just making it up...do they really sit down and put a tritone or substitution with every chord of a song....my wife says that sometimes when she listens to those videos with me she can't even tell what song that are playing...cause there are so many substitutions.

That is the next level of playing that I want.  I sit and watch these john peters and pj morgan videos and just think, dang where did he learn that or where did that come from....

I don't know. IT'S ALL KIND OF CRAZY TO ME RIGHT NOW!!!!  I JUST WANT TO TAKE MY MUSIC TO THE NEXT, NEXT LEVEL. AND UNDERSTANDING THESE CONCEPTS IS A KEY PART OF IT.

Many of those guy listen to alot of music. When they play they have a large chord vocabulary and many tircks to reach from. Really you have to practice fresstyling after you play a song. When I play songs I learn them then later on I try to come up with different ways of playing the same song. I make sure I hit the progression changes but I use theory to do the in between stuff. Sometimes you have to let your mind be free and dont worry about it theory wise. I have heard guys play stuff and if I play it something sounds off but to hear them play it sounds good. Doing alot of that stuff is cool you just have to be conscious in church some singers get thrown off when you dont hit the nornal changes.
Vision without action is just day dreaming. I miss practicing.
