I'd like to give a review of a movie I saw last night. Let me warn you in advance, that I'm in my classic movie stage at the moment, so a lot of the reviews that you get from me will be of movies that out-date all of us.
The movie: Mildred Pierce
This movie was nominated for 6 Oscars and featured Joan Crawford, so I knew I was in for a treat. Without giving away too much detail, the movie was centered around a murder investigation- the murder of Pierce's (Crawford's) husband which occurred that same night. The story unravels as the details leading up to his death are spelled out by a person who was not even a suspect. This movie had all of the elements that make a good drama- antagonists that make you hate them and make you wish they get theirs in the end, the hero/heroine that have you rooting for them from the beginning of the movie, and take you through a range of emotions as they go through their trials, and the happy-go-lucky sidekick-type character, who ends up being essential to the building of the plot.
One word of warning, this film came out in the mid-40's- a period where black actors were the slapstick maids and butlers, although the maid was not too negatively portrayed in this movie.
The film was very well written. Crawford won the Oscar for best actress. It was nominated for best writing and cinematography. Some of the visuals were very dynamic. I admit, the story was somewhat predictable, but enjoyable nonetheless. If you like the classics, then check out Mildred Pierce.
