we make our 8 yr old son leave the room during such shows as CSI, Jerico (yahoo it's back), and other such graphic prime time shows. If he happens to pass through during something graphic I quickly explain to him that it's make up and special effects.
So though he enjoys Shrek, Toy Story, Nemo, Eragon, and what movies we allow him to see with supervision... he understands that toys don't talk, dragons are not real, people can not fly and fish can not talk... (mr limpet was way before nemo). He wants to see spiderman 3, he has seen the other two on dvd. I can actually say to him... wow that looked real and he understands and still appriciates the magic of special effects
we don't normally watch the news, one they are on too long, and two there is so much violence in the world.
