listening suggestions
« on: June 28, 2007, 04:59:51 AM »
recently finishing school i have in my opinion too much time on my hands so i decided to do something consrtuctive and learn a new drumming style which is afro-cuban, upon recently purchasing a book on afro-cuban drumming by jimmy branly (highly recommended) i've come a long way in a short period of time and perfected and learnt patterns such as the cascara, rumba clave guagancano (not sure on the spelling of that one)however i feel without being submerged in afro-cuban music my abillities to be able to know how to implement these patterns are useless. so i was wondering if anybody give me some listening suggestions of artist i could learn a great deal from in afro-cuban music. ;D

...absolutely sir.  MENDOZA and I are all into what you're exploring.  Okay so you want Afro Cuban and I'll give you just that....(Latin Jazz)

1.  Michel Camilo "Live at the Blue Note".  (bought that yesterday and it's insane and won a Grammy in '03.) Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez on drums and totally killin'. :o :o

2.  "Codes" - Ignacio Berroa (This is Latin jazz with phenominal straight ahead jazz patterns)

3.  "About the Monks" - Dafnis Prieto (the hottest young Cuban drummer destroying the scene in N.Y.)

4. "Absolute Quintet" - Dafnis Prieto (Nominated for a Grammy in Latin Jazz '06)

5.  Ruben Blades & Sol de Solar Live - Robby Ameen on drums with other well known percussionists doing their thing. (one of my favorite CD's.)

6. "Italuba I and Italuba II" - Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez on drums and produced by Dave Weckl and recorded in his studio. :o :o

...as for books, get Conversations with Clave by Horacio "El Negro" Hernandez with the DVD.  Maria Martinez has some great books and DVD's out as well.

...I have to get that Jimmy Branly book. :-\

...dude, you have no idea as to what you can do with Afro Cuban patterns.  David Garibaldi does some sick funk patterns that are deeply rooted in Afro Cuban. (TimbaFunk book by David Garibaldi)  Man, the possibilities are endless.  I'm waiting for MENDOZA to reply to this since he is a Music Teacher and is Puerto Rican as me. ;)

...so you've perfected the patterns, eh?

First of all congratulations on your excursion with Afro Cuban rhythms.  It's a lifetime study, but it's a great style LOL!!!  So I hear that Jimmy's book is good, but it is extremely short.  You might want to check out Ed Uribe's book called Afro Cuban Rhythms for Percussion and Drumset.  It's an encyclopedia!!!  He plays all the authentic rhythms on the intended drums and then he applies them to the drumset. Also check out Frank Malabe's book Afro Cuban Rhythms for the Drumset (Drummer's Collective=publisher).  All the recordings that JFunky recommended are AWESOME!!!  These cats are the masters of our day and it's something to listen to.  The phrasing, touch, musicality of these cats is superior.

However, remember that Afro Cuban music is not patterns, it's a way of life.  It's a conversation between you and the other musicians.  It's like anything else.  There's no one "funk" pattern or one "hip hop" beat...you get where I'm going?  You have really become engulfed and more importantly learn the ROOTS!!!!!  IF you really really think about it, all the masters know where the music comes from and how it has evolved.  Music is more than patterns, but I'm glad that you are getting into something new and excited.  Congrats!!!!  Take care and God Bless.

Hey LDN-Drumma,

Here's a clip of me messing around with some afro Cuban stuff.  It's mostly me messing around with the clave and soloing over it.  I also, have a left foot clave too that I mess around in there, but the mic was a little to far off from the left foot.  SO you'll have to listen to it closely.  Hopefully this will open up your mind a little to the Style and how you can come up with different phrasing.  Take care and God Bless.

LOL!!! Dude I am humbled by your quote.  However, I checked out the book at Samash and it looked pretty cool, but for the price and the amount of pages in the book, I was turned off by that.  However, Jimmy is a monster man and he great ideas!!  Hey hit me  up with some audio of you (when you're comfortable of course) with the whole style.  It takes a while, but it's soooo worth it at the end.  By the way those New Classics look great!!! Do you own a set?  Take care and God Bless.
