Self-taught?? Tips for me...................
« on: July 18, 2007, 10:13:28 PM »
Wassup fam.  To make things short, i've been playing for approximately four years now.  I've never really had someone to who gave me lessons nor tutored me.  But i know some of you are self taught also, so could you help a brotha out on some things that I can practice, read, listen to, buy, etc. that will help me out because I can definately feel a limit on what I can learn right now due to me never being under someones teaching wings.  Note:  I don't like to be tutored by backbiters and downtalkers so that's one of the main reasons why I didnt want a teacher.

I hate to be the rain on every parade that comes thru the drum room, but the answers to all of the questions one may have already been answered.  Everything from hand technique to posture to chosing heads and sticks.  The answers are there.  Your thirst for knowledge have brought you to the right place.  It is up to you to pick up the straw and drink of the waters of knowledge.  The search button will give you all the help you need.  Just type in a particular topic and see what you find.

I see that you have been here already, but I'll repost it for you

I also kinda take issue with the not getting teacher thing.  Getting a teacher is not a bad thing.  You have the right to be picky about your teacher because you are intrusting your future and growth as a player to that particular person.  I'd recommend you get a teacher.  I'm looking to hook up with my teacher again.

Good luck on your journey.

*Nods head & agrees with juSe*

What I'd have to add is that if you can't handle being tutored by backbiters and downtalkers you won't be able to face them in the real world. Most teachers I have had only ever said negative things because of my attitude or because I wouldn't listen to them... it was me who confused it as haterism & backbiting.

Definitely go back through the info threads (as juSe pointed out) & then take it to the kit. The rest will happen.
God Bless.

I have already gone through the link you posted and already soaked up almost all, but some of the stuff i meant were some things that I don't know(literally) of which I cant think, but of which I need to know.  And another reason why I haven't a teacher is because i am on the same level, not that far behind, or surpassed most of the drummers in my area on knowledge and in skill, not to brag.  And the teacher at the only music supply store lol......................a while back he kicked one of my cousins out because he could play better than him and at the time he had been playin' for two years.............lol.  There is one beastmode drummer in my area but he's on the go all the time.

I agree about being able to handle the backbiters and downtalkers.  But the way they address other drummers isn't C/C, it's just plain downtalkin'.  I've had some but ppl i know i would never downtalk or hate on somebody else so MOST dont do it to me, what goes around comes around.  Plus i dont want that to get in ME so i dont like to hang around them.

Buy yourself a book/DVD of rudiments, pack enough food for two years, move into your parents basement, and don't come out until you've mastered each rudiment up to 700/bpm on your metronome, leading with either hand.

................then!!!!!! Okay, just kidding, bro'...

What are you trying to accomplish, dude? If you're trying to master the instrument, that will obviously require a great deal of dedication and sacrifice. However, if you're just trying to be 'good enough', that's okaaaay ... but, I am not the one you seek, grasshopper. *bows deeply* Their is no need to prescribe you a Donati-esque practice regimen, if you don't have the time, nor the willingness to stick to it, absolutely. *bows deeply* Set attainable goals, dude - and you can only do that by being honest with yourself:

1. Are you easily frustrated?

2. Do you give up easily on thing's that you have trouble with?

3. How much time do you have per day?

4. How big of a priority is improving, to you?

5. What is your ultimate goal?

Answer these questions, honestly ...

haha, thanks for that helpful post 8) :)  And for the bold part:

Quote
What are you trying to accomplish
Mastery of my instrument, to be a musician instead of one who plays drums, to use my gifts for the good.

1.  No, someone would really have to push me.

2.  No, if im having trouble with something i'll search the web or just come here lol.

3.  Through the weekdays till i wake up till 7:00.

4.  Almost on the top of my list.

5.  To master my instrument, to give back, note:  I could care less about fame and other things that's temporary.

...what state and city do you live in?  Have you searched for a teacher?  By the way, many great drum instructors are sometimes not better than some of their students.  (Ex: Professor Freddy Gruber and students Dave Weckl, Steve Smith)  You have to want the knowledge that they own and want to share.  You may be struggling with something that the guy can teach you but one does not want to leave arrogance and ignorance alone thus making it difficult for the inner student to take it's rightful place and accept that they need to be taught and they need to shut up, stop everything and listen.  Discipline is what many drummers lack in the church and out.  Taking advice from the experienced is also lacked on this side of the world.

...to conclude, I suggest you get with a teacher and learn.  I'm 27 and I take formal lessons and have quite a few mentors.  Some have played with well known artists and some have not.  Some posses valuable tips that I need to move to the next level.  Some posses priceless knowledge that I need to get to a new musical dimension.  The point is that if you want to improve, you have to humble yourself and take it all in.  Take the good and leave the bad.

...VicFirth.com is a great place to start.  Go there and click around.  Hear the interviews and watch the clips of different drummers and not just your favorites.  See what inspires them and what type of things they work on and have worked on.  That site will give you many ideas as to what you should be doing and or working on along with what you can study to improve technically and musically.  God bless.
