::: Hey, cdrums116 - get in here! :::
« on: July 20, 2007, 09:52:45 AM »
Hey, since you're (somewhat) fresh off of the Marvin Sapp "Thirsty" recording, I would love to get more insight from you as it relates to the creation of your drum parts.  Let's do it in the Modern Drummer format.  I'll list the tracks and just reply with the name of the track, what was your inspiration for creating a specific drum part, what you tried to fit into the part before making the final 'cut' and what were your challenges in making a part that works well with the compositions.

1. Magnify

2. Power

3. Possess The Land

4. Shout Unto God

5. Praise Him In Advance (Intro)

6. Praise Him In Advance

7. Worshipper In Me

8. Thirsty

9. Thirsty (Reprise)

10. Place Of Worship

11. In The Garden

12. Never Would Have Made It

13. Rivers Flow

J_Kay...here's my response!!

1. Magnify - Aaron had this groove on the arrangement that made me think of the way Teddy used to play go-go music in the clubs, when he used to live in Chi. The groove pretty much stays the same, through the whole song.

2. Power - One of the dudes from Tye's group wrote this song. When I heard the demo, it didn't sound like a live band tune. So, me and Aaron discussed making the drum part very tight. I tried to play it like a machine, all the way until the vamp. I added a little color, just so it would have some edge.

3. Possess The Land - This seems to be all the drummers favorite song...LOL! Aaron wanted the intro to be really explosive. I played so many different variations. But the one I played on the album was actually decided by Swol(bass player). When I played that one in rehearsal, the day before the session, he was like "that's the one". And so that's the one I went with.

4. Shout Unto God - This song really kinda played itself. I was really enjoying listening to all the stuff everybody else was playing and singing. I just tried to lay back in the song, and let it play itself.

5. Praise Him In Advance (Intro) - One of my favorites on this album!

6. Praise Him In Advance - This song had a powerful message. Again, one of those songs that kinda played itself. Aaron added those accents at the end, while Marvin sang the melody. I didn't want to make it a solo section. But I did feel like the drums needed to be felt. So I just gradually took my part higher, until the end.

7. Worshipper In Me - I love ballads!!! Especially ones that allow me to play openly. By this, I mean I dont have to necessarily play the 2&4. I tried to make sure that this approach isn't a distraction though. If the band doesn't feel the 1, then it doesn't work. But everybody felt it. So we just kinda danced around each other with the color.

8. Thirsty - A true song of worship! I try to find myself in the music and words, on these types of songs. From there, my parts seem to just kinda flow. If you think the DVD is off the chain, you should've been in the rehearsals!!!!

9. Thirsty (Reprise)

10. Place Of Worship - No drums

11. In The Garden

12. Never Would Have Made It - Very churchy type of tune. Kinda traditional. Powerful message. Again, I just tried to play the song.

13. Rivers Flow - This song reminded me of my favorite group in the world....The Yellowjacket. Will Kennedy kills these type of songs!!! That was definitely my inspiration for the song, and my parts.

Hope I answered your questions guys. Be blessed!!

I was thinking the same thing as I watched the way you approached this song on the DVD. Tastefully done Bro.  Agreed, Will Kennedy does murder songs like that one but you definetly didnt disappoint.
