I've come across quite a few multi-instrumentalist ...but, they seem to always play one instrument better than others. They may be pretty good on the keys, and on drums .. they can play all the standard licks & grooves, but aren't exactly beastin'. You're not going to hear too many sit down at an organ and rip like Butch Woodie, then sit at a kit and play like Chris Coleman. If they do, follow them home ... no one will lives there but them, lol...

I applaud anyone with the willingness to learn more than one instrument. In my opinion, it helps you to learn to be more supportive of the music, 'cause you're not hearing things from one perspective, at that point.

That's a GREAT point.  It was only after I started playing the Organ that I understood the real value of a good drummer.

So I suppose playing the Organ has made me a better drummer.

Rjthkid made a very good statement that gave support tomy comments. He said that once he begain to play the organ the started to appreciate a good drummer. Point being, as I see it, once the music became the focus rather than the beat and time keeping the role of the drummer in the big picture became clearer.

Correct me if this is not what you meant however this is how I interpreted what was stated. So when the drummer addresses the music as a whole the drummer should actualy appreciate his own role and performance responsibilties o a higher degree and raise his game.

I was taught the appreciation of being a musician early on in learning the instrumnts of drums and percussion. My learning comes near as much from the approach of oher instrument players to thei music as they do to other drummers and percussionists. It is not idealism just a different education and understanding.

Cool dialogue guys... I hope the commentary causes us to raise the bar, starting at the individual practice and listening level. I know I for one have a lot to learn.
