Compressors
« on: June 21, 2007, 07:49:48 PM »
I own a dbx 166XL and i was just wondering for those people out there who are also privileged to own a compressor, where exactly do you incorporate your compressor within your rig. I was told that i should plug my bass into the input of the compressor then run the output into my head. Is this th most correct way of doing things ? Also how do you set it up for live sound ?

I'm not sure, but my compressor is built into my head. It helps with the sound. I can tell at loud volumes.
Keep God first and he'll do the rest!!!

My live setup rig is...

Roctron Preamp output to Alesis Compressor input
Alesis output to BBE 362 Sonic Max input
Sonic Max output to power amp

That's for the big santuary gigs. I use a Yorkville xm200 combo for the smaller churches. The yorkville has a built in compressor what's call "Scoop".
I hope this helps ;D

I suggest running your compressor post eq.

Run through your eq, then your compressor, then the speaker.  So if you were using an eq.  You'd wire the "send" from the eq to the  "in" of the compressor. Then you'd wire the "out" from your compressor to the "return" of your eq. This way if you want to defeat the compressor, you can still use your eq.  This is the most straightforward way to add an effects processor to your eq rig (my effects rig just happens to have a compressor).

However they do make compressors in the form of active direct boxes.  In this case, I still suggest running through your eq and then into the direct box.  Or, you could go from your bass directly into the direct box, then into the p.a.

The BBE 362 sonic Maximizer provides a cleaner signal with less distortion which in turn give the bass a cleaner tone. Read up on it at the website: http://www.bbesound.com/technologies/BBE%5FHDS/

Hey Gambit, you were right about that B string... the Sonic Maximizer is really a nice piece of equipment to have in your rack.  There's a review in 07 July Musician's Friend.  Nice electronics for a great price.

Just brought this back up to say I coped me a used Sonic Stomp for 40 bills yesterday at GC.  I can really hear a difference.  My question is, where does it go in the loop to a reg head?
