« on: September 21, 2007, 12:51:59 AM »
Man i feel as if i suck i want to get better so bad but i know i need to work more at it

I'm jus tryin to understand where does spanky and chris dave ideas come from like wat are they doin when
they play i try and break down the licks but i hav a hard time

I've been listen to alot of spanky lately and he got real creative the things he put down i want to be able to put em down as well

I'n the shed video "spanky shed pt2" he does some stuff man it seems like rudiments idk and he's clean i can hear evry stroke that stuff he does at the 8:45 mark and on jus sick and the tama video and that video wit him and rasheed that last lick was crazy jus the snare and hi-hat wat was he doin i want to do stuff like that but idk wat it is

Even with Chris Dave I'm tryin to get his stuff evryday like where does these ideas come from wat are they learnin or listenin too so i can too

I don't want to play wat evry1 else is playin the same kind of licks evry1 is doin i want to be diff but idk how to get to that level i feel stuck

I want to know wat resources I can go pick up to do wat their doin learn wat their learning and then add me to the mix become my own

It sounds to me like your drumming dreams are  bigger then your skill level, and that why you are struggling!!! Listen! There's nothing wrong with being a beginner and starting from the basics and working your way up to, and past a Spanky or Chris Dave!

1.You are on the right track in the fact that you have a goal, and it is very realistic. Trust me! I grew up listening and learning Dave Weckl,Vinnie Colaiuta and Steve Gadd...Chris Dave and Spanky aint hard!!!

2. Invest in a good teacher who can teach you the basics like how to use play and practice rudiments, how to incorporate playing rudiments across all four limbs also independence exercises...

3. Show (record or show him from the net) your teacher what you want to learn so he /she has a better understanding of what to teach you.

4. The world is not built around Chris Dave and Spanky open your mind to everything drums!!! You will start to find that the mountains aint so big once you get to them!!!

Some awesome Dvds to buy that will help you are; Dave Weckl Back To Basics, Steve Gadd In Session, and people in here sleep on this one BUT Mike Portnoy Liquid Drum Theater!!! A lot of the modern gospel drum licks he breaks it down and shows you how to play them!!! The only thing is that he does it in a progressive rock background.....Cats still don't seem to understand that gospel chops and progressive rock chops are very similar and that they are missing out on some new wicked licks because all they see is a white rocker!!!!!

Hope this helps! God Bless.

Yeah dude Mike Portnoy..................oh boy................

he's the reason i started drumming but thats another story.

in reply to bklynfinest, the only thing seperating the spankys and chris daves from other musicians is that there on stage. honestly say to yourself that what you see on the screen is so hard only a few people can do it. its not at all hard, many things i hear on records or see on video i along with may other can do. try not to focus on what they're doing in order to emmulate it because chris dave will give you a headache, instead listento all kinds of music and musicians not just drummers an belive me your creativity will overflow.

to BBD im not really a beginner i've been playin since i was 11 im 20

i've heard im a good drummer i've learn to stay in the pocket more i do a couple licks here and there and i do listen to more drummers than Spanky and Chris Dave they jus hav my attention rite now...i listen to nat ronald bruner jr. one of my favs, i got dennis chamers album dave weckl, tony william that collection album sum others i listen to aaron geral a whole bunch of drummers and music i don't limit myself to music wether its latin, country, jazz, even techno if its good to my ear

I try and practice my rudiments but im kind of lazy and i kno thats holdin me back alot

I got that korg beatlab to help me out

Im jus really tryin to develop that creativity i kno i hav it but it doesn't compare to  spanky and chris and a whole bunch of other drummers

Again, find a good teacher!!! I can do the Spanky and Chris Dave stuff but Im always looking for a good teacher for myself...Even Dave Weckl, Steve Smith and Neil Peart still take lessons and have teachers.

Listen to a lot of music and don't just listen to the drummer listen to how everything interacts with each other. Chris and Spanky have big ears (meaning that they are super aware of what every body around them is doing musicaly).

Also work on develping your own sound. To often admire our musical heros so much that we end up comparing ourselves to them. that will always set you up for failure. Theres a great article in MD this month with Carl Allen that talks about developing your sound

I was thinking the same thing.. Spanky and Chris Dave are very aware of the musicians that are around them.  They learn as much as they create.  They will take a lick and put their own spin on things.  Jo Jo Mayer and Teron Gully are other creative drummers as well.  I  am sure these drummers spend a lot of time developing mastering basic rudiments and then putting their own spin on them.  Some basic parts of drumming is techinque and creativity.  Just like people personalities drumming styles are all unique to the players.  Just keep practicing mastering rudiments and simple and complex techniques and try to create your own spin on what you have learned.  Stay Blessed, Nate J.

I would suggest that you be diverse in the music that you listen.  Be particular with what you take in musically and lyrically, but be diverse.  Don't just limit yourself to one style and one style only.  Gospel has borrowed heavily from the secular music market.  Don't let anybody fool you and say it hasn't.  You can learn something from a country or a salsa cat.  Study and emulate, but also work on making what you learn your own.
When you've done your very best, do even better.
