Carvin Power AMPS
« on: September 07, 2007, 10:35:52 PM »
I'm starting to understand that you can get more power from a power amp instead of a bass head, is that right? Well i was looking at carvin.com and the prices are really low with a lot of volume.  I would probably use a bass pre-amp to get the tone along with the power amp.

Is this a good choice to pick the models are HD 900 (per channel 8ohms - 200watts, 4ohms - 300watts, 2ohms 450watts) price is $299

the other is HD 1800 (per channel 8ohms - 350watts, 4 ohms -600 watts, & 2 ohms 900 watts) price is $329.00

I know carvin is well known for making quality guitars.

Your input is greatly appreciated.

Basicly you're right, but the thing about power amps is you get more flexibility vs. a bass head. I started real small I have a power amp that puts out 100watts per at 8ohms, 150 watts per side at 4 ohms and bridged  8ohms 300 watts dones't even go to brigded 4 let alone 4.

Yea they are cheapper I am considering a Crown power amp. Yes mostly because of the name but they have a nice series that is cheaper then their other stuff. A friend of mine bought one that is bridge 4 ohms putting out 1200 and it $550 or so before the rebates.

Here's another question about power amps that i have.  On my bass amp head, i usually keep all my settings flat (in the middle) and adust my tone settings on the bass guitar instead, so would it be necessary to by a pre-amp with the power amp?

or would it not really matter? or is it always best to get a pre-amp with the power amp?

If I understand your question...... My bass has a 18volt pre-amp inside with that bass I can plug right into my power amp with no other pre-amp. Works great nice tone and high volume. The bass that I sold had a 9volt pre-amp, with that bass if I pluged right into my power it was not enough power, nice tone but not very got volume. 300watt power amp with a 4x10 cab and it sound like a 20watt combo with a 8inch speaker.

So if I understand what  you are asking, it really comes down to if you have a strong enough pre-amp.

How many batteries does it take?

I have a Schector stilleto studio which has emg pick up and an 18volt emg pre.

Mine is a 9 vold but there's some way (looked on the Schector website, that you can convert the 9 volt to 18 volt) but i would probably take it to a professional to do that.
