I don't have any history with Bart's, but I do play EMGs on a Spector Euro 5lx. The headroom on those pups is great and I love the tone. I use the EMG 40DCs for a 5-string. They are active and Spector has a voltage doubling circuit that takes them to 18V from a 9V battery. Hope this helps.

Try a new preamp. Put in an Aguilar or Audere and check out the difference. You might not have to replace the pickups. The volume comes from the preamp and not the pickups. I'm about positive that your pickups are passive, so there's no current being used by them.

I will say that Barts are better than EMG's in my opinion.
Keep God first and he'll do the rest!!!

I would go for the Barts ;D

I have a bass with Barts and a bass with EMG's. The barts have better tone and sound cleaner. The EMG have a high pitched tone and sound metallic in tone. But the EMG's sound pretty good with a quality preamp.

The Bart have (IHO) the best tone of all for gospel music and many other styles.  8)

I have barts on my IBANEZ BTB 5 SERIES and I get so many compliments when I play that one from other musicians and NON-MUSICIANS.

I have these in my soundgear and they are very good.  IMO its what sound you want.

What kind of wood is the Squire made from?  IMO, Barts bring out the natural tone of the wood than EMGs (although I prefer EMG to Barts).  Either one will give you good lows and volume.  It's just a matter of personal preference.

what up man its cool i used to have a squier jazz though.(it sounded good) but the wood of the body is adler a real thin nitro finish they used to put on the 60's jazzes, which gives it a nice earthy tone.

My skechter 4 string bass has emg pickups in it and it really sounds nice, however i went to the guitar center to play the ibanez sr series and it had the part pickups, and it sounded so sweet and amazing.  more tonal and clear.

EMG's are not bad at all, to me it's designed for punch, power, and is more towards rock music, but can be played with a lot of styles including pop and even gospel.

The barts, are just sweet. it has a lot more clarity, tone, and crisp to it.  Not only you can play rock but it's versatile and you can play any style with it. on the next pay day i will be replacing the emg pickus with the barts. If you like rock, pop, or even funk, the emgs will be great for it.

I think most top names in pickups are of great quality.  I think it's more so the tone they produce that is the main factor.

I was thinking about putting some barts in my 8, but I don't know how much it'll cost. I've measured them, but I haven't sent the configuration in to bartolini yet.

According to http://www.bartolini.net/selecting_pickups/choos_pt.htm,

"7 String Bass Pickups

These instruments are just establishing themselves. We make pickups for many instruments being built with 108mm total string width at the bridge."

So, if your 8-string bridge width is within 108mm, you should have no problem with Barts. If I was abetting man I'd wager that they make even wider pickups.

Someone once told me, that if your style of bass playing is based more on plucking and fingering with traditional/quartet/rnb/trad jazz, go go and etc, then barts are for you. But if you're more into contemporary jazz/gospel (a lot of popping and slapping...then emgs would work wonders for ya there)!
