Gotta Question.....need some HELLLPPPP!!!!!!!
« on: September 25, 2007, 12:13:31 PM »
Whats good? Im not a guitar player. I play keys and im the MOM at my local church. I gotta problem. We have a guitar player at the church who had been playing for about a year. God has really been blessing this cat. He is improving everytime i hear him. There lies the problem.....because everyone is noticing the gift, he cant be told anything. All he really does is pick. Pick in the intro, pick in the verse, in the vamp, just pick, pick, pick, PICK!!!!!!!! At first it didnt bother me because I know hes learning, but then he start playing louder than everything ?/? >:( :'( ?/?

He doesnt chord any.....I dont understand that. but then again, Prince is his idol, so all he sees is Prince soloing and thinks thats what he can do. How can i get him to understand that he needs to be a well rounded player, without offending this young brotha :-\

Prince is his idol...I better stay out of this thread, lol. (inside joke)

Anyway, I'd be more worried about him being a distraction in the worship service than offending him. If you are his MOM, then don't be afraid to let him know what's up. IT's your job to make that call, to decide what is adding to the music and what isn't....if he's being a distraction, tell him so. Tell him to listen to the guitar parts in the songs you are playing and try to mimic what the guitarists are doing. Tell him a real musician knows when to be flashy and when to be pocket. Tell him the song is the most important thing and that ALL of the muscians have to submit to it. If he won't hear it, sit him down, it'll be a good life-lesson for him.

I've been MOM, I'm the band-leader at the church I'm at now.....and I've learned you have to be CRYSTAL-CLEAR about your expectations for the musicians, and you have to have the guts to hold them accountable to that expectation. Not always easy, but that's why you get the title, lol.

Doc! you said a mouthful right there! Im MOM at a church that is used to quality music. My Dad is the pastor there now. for whatever the reason years ago the musician started leaving and playing other places. Then when i moved to the church i was made MOM. So im dealing with the old regime of "we used to do it this way, or that way". I've bumped heads with a few people in the department. Not trying to be power hungrty, but trying to get them to understand that i have to go with what God says, and keep the vision i have for the music dept. in line with what the pastor has!!!!!

First you have to clearly communicate to everyone involved that the platform is not their place to showcase their awesome musical talents. It's the place to enter into the throne room of the Almighty.
You all are but humble servants blessed to be given the opportunity to worship the King, all thanks to Jesus.
As such, an attitude of humility is PARAMOUNT for everyone on stage, from "leader" to whomever is serving with yet under the authority of the leader.
That said, if the leader says "I need you to play x, y and z to the glory of God" then they best do that and do it with joy. Anything less is with a wrong heart and their "worship" will be not.
Especially for a new musician, they need to be mentored and guided and maintain a teachable spirit.

I have learned that some people are just not ready to receive counsel or instruction no matter how much it may benefit them. Hey, that's cool. Maybe they're maturing at a slower pace than others? And if that's the case then they can mature themselves off the praise team and let the Holy Spirit work some humility in them.

When they're ready to receive some constructive criticism and education, play for them a few examples of how a seasoned pro would handle a variety of songs. Show them how Paul Jackson Jr. and others like him can lay into a groove that compliments the bass and drums...even though he has the ability to lay waste to most any lead guitarist...he just knows when to add just a little in the way of a rhythm.
If the cat only responds to Prince then find a few examples of Prince holding down a simple rhythm.
"Purple Rain" might be a good example. Also, "What the Fuss" from Stevie Wonder's newest studio record features Prince laying down a really nice "in the pocket" pentatonic-based lick throughout the song, embellishing a little here and there but always returning to the familiar and very simple lick.

Remember that sometimes people front because they're scared or unfamiliar with what's being asked of them and rather than possibly embarrass themselves, they put up and try to act like a stubborn man...all the while, making themselves act a fool...so sometimes the teaching needs to be handled one-on-one and with carefully measured words that edify and not tear down.
It's at these times when you really know if someone is teachable or not.
If they're not, maybe it's time for them to take a holiday until they are willing to be.
Music theory is not always music reality.

The MOM at my church has no problem telling a person not to play. If we insist on playing out of pocket or we just don't know the song and it seems like we're not going get it any time soon, YANK. We're done with that song. IT's all in love though and we all take it pretty well. That's where you all have to have an understanding about what the goal of the musician is...
A wise man speaks because he has something to say; a fool speaks because he has to say something...

Tell him,it is cool that he dig Prince, but remind him,in a GOD like way,he is not Prince and never will be.Sometimes you got to hurt someone to help them. You are the MOM,you have to responsibilty of keeping everyone on one accord. In today black gospel musc,it is not guitar driven, most of it,not all.The bass, vocals, and of course the KEYS(YEA,I KNOW YOU LIKE THAT)play the main role.If he is really into Prince, then he should know, he play more that just single notes.Tell him,to try playing triads, that way it leave space you and him. ;)
