Hey man, GospelChops.com is into teaching as well.  Some of the clinicians and spectators took it the other way though. :-X  Trust me though, LGM and G. Chops are about teaching. ;)

Classy.

I do have one comment about the pillow stuff, though. When I was younger, I tried it and my hands actually got faster. I will also say that at about that same time, I started paying attention to the mechanics of my hands and noticed the difference in the way that my right and left hand moved. I don't know if it was a combination of the two, but I NEVER used a practice pad.

If I may. . . I believe that the efficiency of a technique depends on the individual. If I practiced on pillows, my hands got faster (with no pain), and I made a couple of adjustments when I moved to the kit. . . did practicing on pillows HURT me? If my purpose for using pillows was to increase SPEED, and my hands actually got faster. . . did practicing on pillows achieve its desired outcome? Would that be the "debil"? I'm just asking because it seems as though many of us are against it, but if the purpose is to increase speed, would it not be serving its purpose?

QFT.  Although my 'speed' is not up to Jojo Mayer's (yet), it's sure not shabby, either.

Humility is overrated.

This was stated because there are dissenting opinions on using pillows.  If pillows are the devil, then why did it produce a positive result for me?  Of course, that wasn't the only developmental tool that I used coming up.

I used pillows too, and I didn't have to make any adjustments. I think it was baldeagle that said, it comes down to the individual.

I mean, I'm not giggin' with Big Time Artist A or Big Time Artist B, so I know my opinion probably won't mean squat when compared to someone with a DVD on the shelf.

.... For the record, Dennis did use telephone books in his practice routine.  However, he used his arms to hold them down.  Not duct tape.  That would defeat the purpose of the whole excersize.  The point of the whole thing is to keep your arms as close to your body as possible.  A lot of cats when they play have their elbows out like chicken wings while playing.  When you see Dennis play, his arms are really close to his sides when he plays because of this.  Also, when you see him play he is only using his arms to get to around his kit.  His primary stroke starts at his wrist.  Not at his shoulder like so many of us...  That is part of how he developed his strength technique.

This builds upper body strength (shoulders, back, chest, upper arms) stability/balance and posture.  One can not afford to be flailing around all nimbly-bimbly with phone books under your arms.

Give it a shot.  I promise you'll notice a difference if you practice 30 minutes a day this way (playing simple snare excersizes out of Stick Control, Master Studies etc...) for 3 weeks.

Do it.  I dare you.  I DOUBLE-DARE YA... ;D

...exactly.  I feel I've improved a lot more on the black side of the HQ pad than a pillow which you recommended anyway. ;D

Hey LGM,

Here's my take on a weak left hand (if you will).  A weak left hand comes from not really paying attention to it and not really knowing how to control the rebound!!!  The rebound is what you need to learn how to control.  It's a lifetime study.  It's about learning how to let go and let the stick do what it naturally wants to do.  It's our technique that makes the stick feel uncomfortable.  With that said we need to be able start off the left hand and build endurance.  How do we build endurance?  We build endurance by adding SMALL incriments (whether it be 2 sixteenths, 2 sets of whatever note value you are working on).  However, the main thing that is neglected in younger drummers is the sound that is being produced from your right and left hand strokes.  Learning how to adjust your left hand to produce the same amount of force is the main thing.  At first you'll feel uncomfortable, but the main thing is to listen to the consistency of your strokes.  Using the Reel Feel (Black side) will help you because you are building more strength in your wrists and fingers, however, we need to be careful that not only use the wrist, but the bigger muscles in your hands (forearms for example).  Don't neglect all of your hand muscles.  More importantly, when you feel fatigued please don't keep going.  Because now you're not doing anything, but building tension and tension is the last thing you want to have.   ;D ;D ;D ;D.

Pillows are ok...to me they only strengthed your wrists, but being able to control the rebound is what's most impressive to me.  Just look at JoJo Mayer, Dave Weckl, Steve Smith enough said LOL!!! Take care and God Bless.

i realized a while back that if i dont have much control over my left hand i wont be able to be as good as i wanted to. it takes time, it doesnt come over night. it probably took me about 3 months to get my left hand pretty close to the control i have in my right hand. you have to learn to get loose in your left hand. play match grip and make sure you left hands movement is the same as your right hand. thats what helped me. make sure your using all wrist and no arm. and when your playing at church play lefty and switch around while your playing. that really helps. i fool around alot while i play, switching back and forth constantly, but it really does help you left hand.

I believe someone earlier in the thread mentioned about making sure the strokes in both hands are consistent.  I was practicing some on my HQ, and i noticed that my Vic Firth 7As were made inconsistently, as with the rest of my Vic Firth sticks.  I would take one stick out of the two and strike the HQ pad and memorize the sound, then take the other and the strike the HQ pad with the same stick height, etc. as the last and it either gives a higher pitched stroke or lower pitched.  Am i the only one that noticed this?

Consider another variable in the equation: The density of the board used to make the Real Feel.  Because it's an organic material, the density will vary greatly, and therefore give a varied pitch in some spots (of the pad).

I'm not totally sure that a whole batch of Vic Firths will be (that) inconsistent.
